  • Eric I have an overheat issue on two cars. The problems are very similar. Initially the temp indicator will be normal then after a while the indicator will go to 3/4 to almost full hot and then return to normal after about a minute. This happens consitently on the first start of the day or any time the car has had time to cool before the next start. One car is a 1990 Mazda Miata and the other is a Lincoln LS 2000. I recently had the timing belt replaced on the Miata and the cooling system was broken into. The Lincoln cooling system was worked on 2 years ago and worked normally for 18 months. I dont have any leaks and the cooling fans come on at the right times. The coolant levels are correct in both cars and I checked for debris around the radiator. I took the Lincoln back to the shop that worked on it and they suggested the sensor for the temperature guage may be bad. They wouldn't guarantee this would correct the problem so I opted not to spend the $300 to replace the sensor. When I first start the Miata I think I I hear coolant circulating in the system but it goes away in a few minutes. I had never heard this before I had the timing belt replaced. I suspect I may have air in the system. I am going to try bleeding the system as you suggested in the video. Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Eric, First of all, great job on your website and your videos. Why not shoot a video showing mechanics and vehicle owner the different kinds of clutching alternator pulleys? Millions of vehicles come factory equipped whith these new pulleys and after several years they wear out and need replacing. Not too much has been done to educate people about these pulleys and these pulleys have some failure modes that can cause mechanics to scratch their heads. YourPalAL www.decouplerpullley.com

  • Hey Eric. My name is Jason. I am from Toledo Ohio. I wanted to say thanks for all the videos you are posting. You have helped me out in so many ways with your advice and how to videos. I am pretty handy when it comes to vehicles and even when most easy fixes and diagnosis seem like common sense, its nice to get that reasurance from you that I am making the right choices in the project I am taking on. Besides common sense ussually comes from experience and what would seem like a common sense situation for you, could be a like trying to read a different language for others. Your honest advice and plain and simple explanations are why I trust all the advice you offer. Thanks for what you do and keep doing what you do. Stay humble and stay dirty. Thanks.

  • i watched over and over your old video labeled oops balljoint and axle replacement you performed on a 1991 accord-- i followed the same steps just today barring the fact that i only needed to replace a axle but all was exactly like u described and performed, the job took maybe 45 mins and was so smooth i was hesitant to start the car and move it but guess what---was on the highway in no time and rolling past 75+ mph... i really appreciate your videos, for those of us who cant afford high priced and sometimes and often unfair car shop prices, you help us survive

  • Eric, I just completed the Clutch Master Cylinder and Slave cylinder replacement on a 98 Integra. Everything went as planned thanks to your video. One problem was the bleeding. It wouldn't bleed. The parts store guy told me it wouldn't bleed unless I bench bled the master cylinder. You may want to mention it so I shadetree mechanics can consider it. After bench bleeding it bled fine. Thanks for your help. These videos are a huge help.
  • Hi,Eric: I have a 1987 Buick LeSabre Limited sedan. Can you explain in one of your videos (which I think are very informative), how can I differentiate a pulley noise from the P/S pump or the tensioner bearing because I've been having a tough time trying to locate the noise that sounds like a bearing. Appreciate your wisdom. Milton

  • Hey there Eric, love the video's. I got a 2001 Dodge Dakota, a lot of times I wish I didn't (people say they're cursed...lets just say I believe it). I'm trying to get it ready to sell. My question is: Transfer case is not engaging, its the electric kind. When I had my clutch done the mechanic said the the wire's were just blowing in the wind, they weren't enclosed. He said don't be surprised if a wire gets pinched and it shorts out. Well, I was out in the boondocks and low and behold it goes out. I'm going to rewire the transfer case to cab wires. Can I just hot-wire a switch into the cab and by-pass all the headache and trouble with the switch if things get messy? Like bypassing the ignition for a push-button ignition? I want to just thrown in a three stage selector switch. What do you think?
  • Hi eric , I have a 97 grand am and we belive the master cylinder has gone bad brake lines were replaced and still very very little break and lines were bled so now we r thinking master cylinder how would i go about replacing this on my car. thank you, Rebecca

  • Hi Eric, I have a problem with my 2004 ford taurus. At idle it runs rough and sometimes I get two codes 171 & 174 or just 171. Ive changed the Mass air flow but that did not change anything. I am running out of options but from what I read online it could be vacuum or something intake related. What would you suspect?
  • hi eric great website lots of patient you r so humorious coming from the west indies great help
  • Eric: I guess you can't say it in your video, so it will be up to me. Regarding the manual transmission, if women knew how attractive they are when competently driving a manual transmission, they'd all be buying one. And, yes, my wife is pretty good with a 5-speed!
  • Hey Eric I'm between a rock and something hard at the moment and thought you'd be able to help me out. I have a 98 civic that I was trying to swap out the transmission and when it came to break the bolts lose holding the tranny to the engine the bolts snapped. Tried penetrating oil, a torch, smacking with a hammer to see if that helped but with no luck. Already snapped two bolts and not even a torque wrench would help. What do you think? Should I just have the mechanics do it to save myself the headache? Thanks for any advice in advance! If it's not too much trouble, can you send it at Trainsmastert6@yahoo.com. Thanks!

  • Hi Eric, I have a manual cable transmission related issue on a 91 Civic Std. Hatch. While driving the car I lost the ability to shift into gear when the engine is running, except for reverse with a little effort. Looking under the dash I did break the clutch peddle assembly, the round bar support ripped off the other mount. This caused the peddle to move to the left as I continued to use the clutch, though it wasn't working. Is the shifting problem in the transmission (clutch kit), the misaligned and broken clutch peddle assembly, or the cable? Do those gates open up by a switch or cable moving the clutch arm?

  • Hey Eric, I have a 1998 3.8L Camaro. I am having a problem where I will lose and gain my heat back and forth in the car. When I lose the heat, my engine temp shoots way up and when it comes back the engine temp drops back down. I am assuming that my heater core is plugged so badly that it is at times completely clogged and not letting the coolant flow freely through the engine. It seems that my heater core hoses are extremely worn and spongy and have little pressure in them as if they have eroded over time and all the pieces got stuck in the heater core. Does this sound about right to you? Thanks a ton, stay dirty, Keith
  • Interesting that the body frame of the vehicle extends no further forward than the mounts for the lower control arm bushes making the job of transmission access a little easier from below (a tick for Ford). Shame that slave cylinder actually looks like it is in the confines of the transmission bell housing making it's replacement a major job. No wonder that the clutch kit contains a new one so as to encourage it's renewal when fixing the clutch disc. Great video, liked the reverse angle shot at 4:50 of the drive shaft mount removal.
  • Hi Eric I have a problem with my 1999 toyota camry le 4 cylinder. I recently had two codes, p0171 and p0174. I went to autozone and they said I may have a vaccum leak. Where do I start to fix this problem? Thank you. Jerry
  • Thanks a million Eric for the clutch Video. I actually am starting one next week! Thanks so much again. Jeff Fader
  • Dear Eric, I want to thank you very much for your You Tube video "Removing Brake Drums, The 'Easy Way." I wanted to replace the rear shoes on my wife's 2000 Toyota Sienna, but found that the drums were firmly stuck on there. I tried Liquid Wrench, banging with a hammer, etc., but had to give up. I was about to schedule an appointment at a local repair shop. But then I searched the internet. I found a lot of suggestions, but your advice about using two 8 X 1.25 bolts was priceless. Your video demonstration of this, and absolute certainty about the correct size bolts to use, gave me the confidence to try this. It worked like a charm, and I was able to do the rear brake job myself. And your advice allowed me to use two 75-cent bolts instead of having to buy an expensive drum removal tool. May God bless you!
  • Hello John speaks from Puerto Rico, I have a mitsubishi lancer 2003 automatic, the third speed is not applied correctly in some cases, oil is brown and smells like burning plastic. I can you change the oil filter?
  • Hi Eric. Thanks for Focus Clutch Part 1 and thanks for making it a freebie. Great video. By the way, it's "Allen" not "Allan" (but I'm just being picky). Roy C in the UK.
  • Used your video technique to unplug a heater core. Worked to a tee minus taste testing the coolant. Very helpful video. Saved a little money and a lot of headache. Have a toasty warm 1988 toyota celica GT. Thanks.

  • I am a mother of two and need help flushing or changing a heater core in my 97 camry where do i start
  • Hi Eric, THANK YOU you were absolutely right! The timing belt did not completely break / rip off rather it sides got shredded off. The water pump had completely seized. The idler pulley rollers got also damaged with the water pump seizing. I opened it up and cleaned up everything all the belt debris, especially around the two cam pulleys. My big concern the rear cam pulley when I put it on top dead center (tdc). And touch slightly it moves forward by 1/4 turn (3 O'clock) or back 1/4 turn (9 O'clock). It almost feels like it is spring loaded - A lot of tension and then pops forwards or back. Is this normal or is the rear cam damaged. When the belt seized the two cam pulleys and crank pulley were all pointing in the same direction. Approximately 10 O'clock. I had to move them manually to tdc. I am waiting to put everything back in place but concerned about the rear cam. Please advice & Thank you, Greg
  • Wonderful as usually, keep up the good work, Greetings from Europe, Sweden
  • Just finished watching one of your youtube's and I want to tell you that you do a very good job with them. One thing I did want to pose to you and of course you may already know this, but I see bad brake hoses, where the hose will trap pressure in the caliper and cause the pad to wear. It is very easy to test for, when we have a draging brake is to just losen the banjo fitting a little bit not even enough to have a fluid drip but if the rotor turns and then stops when the banjo fitting is retightened there is a excelent chance of a bad hose, restricting fluid return.
  • Hows posible to drive a million miles on a car without breaking down?
  • I like the videos they're awesome. I wish they were more people like you when I started out. I kind of relate to what you went thru, as I myself use to work for a a big shop as well with over 80 staff employees, when I found myself in a situation I needed help my coleagues would just curse and tell me to do it myself it was hard and as the months and years went by it wasn't just the quality they really cared about it was more like quantity and working faster and we delt with imports and american it wasn't like a dealership auto which means different cars different diagnosis and parts. I didn't feel the dedication I had and the love anymore, so I quit and am currently working in a smaller shop with great people that really actually love what they do and care about helping out. Sorry for the long comment but you are true and honest and with that I believe comes reward. Good luck keep those vids coming and good work

  • Hey Eric, What do you think about tools mentioned in this article. http://www.batterystuff.com/battery-products/PS12vProX.html I've been having problems with my battery and wanted your opinion. I plan on following your video to help diagnose but I just stumbled on this and was curious.
  • IT only goes up so far because it is set to that standard, when you floor the car "pettal to the meatel" the rps go up to a certin point than youll hear a sound like "rummmm rummmm rummm" and the reason it stops at 4x1000 rpm is beecause it prevents the rpm's going into the red zone, if your car does happen to go into the red zone and stay there for a long period of time there is a chance your moater will over heat and then something bad will really happen so this is normal is most cars with an ecu or any computers on board the older cas from the 60-70 and below will most likely not have theas chips/computers on board the car. they also put thease chips in most stock standard race cars.

  • Hey Eric, Have you worked on Mercedes C230 before? Well, the cars comes factory with a small Supercharger...hence the German name "Kompressor" and, sounds more like a deisel noise(nicking/rattling) from the left side of the engine...been looking on YouTube from others,...they said there is a magnetic clutch engagement...inside the car it has a button (M & S) for Sport...push the Sport supercharger works. All this time im thinking this could be an engine mount.

If i were to move to the L/R...the cam marks is compromised...sorry, Eric hope im making sense of this. Basically if i were to set it the way you did, so aligning to the UP on #1 mark either a little too far to left or too right...because i wanted to have this totally at the Base circle. Please help as time permits! BTW, the timing is correct at 16 degrees BTDC. Sorry just wanted my only car to last Sincerely, Sprydo07

  • Hey Eric, thanks for another great video. One suggestion. If, on your homemade brake bleeder, you ran the clear tube up from the bleed port vertically for about a foot, then down, wouldn't that trap enough fluid in the tube to prevent you from having to hurry back there and shut the bleeder off?
  • Eric, you rock and roll harder than Van Halen! I love watching your videos. Keep up the great work, and nice shop by the way. I like it much more than the old one. Phay

  • Hi Eric I have a question, I had my upper intake valve of the engine replaced with a new gasket and 2 months later I noticed more oil leaking and I took it back to the mechanic who repaired it the frist time and he apologized and the 2nd time he took it apart and put RTV sealant on the gasket.. Now 4 months later Im noticing oil on my garage floor and sure enough its leaking. So my question is this. Should he have replaced the gasket instead of using the old one? Or can you still use the old gasket and put rtv sealant on it? Thanks James Jcrowton@woh.rr.com

  • Hi Eric, because of you, I, an single mother of one with no kind of interest in cars or knowing how to repair a car, has just recently changed my own brakes and did an oil change on my '02 Impala. I am now looking to find out how to get rid of the swooshing noise I hear as I am driving and the hard vibration I feel when ever I brake. The swooshing noise I hear sounds like it's coming from the passenger side and the vibration when I brake, shakes the whole car. Do you have any ideas of what I can look at or check into first?

  • Hi, I rather think it is tricky to put your cleaner vessel IN the car as with a possible leakage you will mess up your car interior. With a less heavy weight car you probably could use your starter to move the car a little bit like in an emergency situation at least with a normal gear box (and older year of built).

  • Why not just leave the inner and outer tie rods together and install them on the rack? You could send in the new inners with the old rack for core credit, that way you don't have to fart around with counting threads etc. This of course would assume that the inners are still good, but you are using the old outers anyway right?
