Yes, that makes sense regarding the compression tester hose (just remove the gauge, yes?). The reason I am asking about the valves is because I want to find out if any were open when I rotated the crank without the timing belt on–cam gear still placed at #1 TDC. I thought that might help me figure out if any valves were open (and open enough) to contact the piston when I rotated the crank.
