Long life oil only applies to engines that do not loose oil. If the state of the rings is good and oil consumption is very low then you should be able to do 5K+ between changes. The problem arrises when the engine is not so good and a lot of fuel contaminants blow by the pistons and mix with the oil. This dilutes the oil and adds carbon particles etc.
