1988 Honda Accord DX Idle Issue – Video Included

Started having idle issues recently. While my boyfriend was in town he discovered that I practically had zero coolant in the radiator. He filled it up and burped the coolant system. Checked for leaks and didn’t find any. Haven’t had to fill up radiator since then. Everything seemed fine for a week and then he went back home. Of course right after he left I started having idling issues again.

For starters on cold start up, it idles around 1 – 2k. This is because a year ago my dad rebuilt the carburetor and I’m pretty sure he didn’t do it properly. Since then it’s always idled that high at startup. It used to idle higher until I had a local shop fix a ton of vacuum leaks. After that it settled back down. My boyfriend seems to think it could be an issue with the choke plate, or the idle set screw, or the throttle cable is to tight and therefore holding the throttle open.

Anyways the real issue lately at least is for some reason, after the engine warms up, my RPM’s are pegged at 3 to 4K. It jumps around but 90% of the time it stays pegged at 4K after warm up. Because I’m afraid I’m going to blow up the engine I have quit driving it but I need it badly in order to get to work. I sent the video to my boyfriend and he thinks it’s either an issue with the carburetor or and ECU issue.

He told me to post the video on this forum since Eric is the Honda Guru and maybe Eric or someone else here could at least pin point what the problem might be so when he’s back in town he knows what to look for and if he can’t fix it, find a local shop that can.
