      F23 4cyl. Auto.

      So I crawled under my car to check to see if my cat was rattling. Prelim check says it is, But I noticed an oil leak. Back side closer to the timing cover. It comes from up high on the cover though. No oil from the cap has dripped down, and the valve cover gasket is dry back there. Oil level is same as when serviced. Older reports say an oil leak was diag, but monitored. It’s about the height of the oil pump, I’m hoping it’s just a pan gasket, or something, but it’s not simple. I already had plans to do my timing belt kit. and my water pump, but if I’m gonna do an oil pump, then I might as well swap my engine after all the parts and labor. lol
      Side note is the crank supposed to wobble that much? Maybe this caused the leak, Maybe front main seal? but the cover is dry below it.

        It’s a little hard to say cuz I can’t see inside but when I see Honda’s with oil in that area It’s usually coming from the crankshaft, camshaft or balance (if it has one) shaft seal. If you remove the timing cover to replace the belt you should replace all of them anyways. It’s also possible that it’s leaking from the valve cover gasket and leaking inside the timing cover.

          The oil leak can come from the back of the cover seal and the plug seal (that come with the cover seal) can cause an excesses oil in the cylinder and create misfire and unbalance internal noise.

            Certainly Not. I would have a misfire condition reported, And I would have internal noise. Both of which I do not have and nor have I had since I bought the car more than a year ago. I’m leaning toward oil pump seals. Not necessarily the oil pump cover seal.

              This is actually a common leak on that engine. I believe it’s coming from the cam seal. BTW the oil pump is run off of the crank on that engine. That said, the cam seal will leak and run along the side of the block in that location. You can wait and address it the next time the timing belt is replaced which is what I would advise.

                the plan is to do the timing belt in a few weeks, And to possibly do the camshaft upgrade, (thats a maybe). I’ll pick up a front seal kit. It’s not even a leak big enough to cause any changes in oil level though.

                  As I said it’s a common leak and nothing to worry too much about. The oil doesn’t contaminate the timing belt because it leaks behind a plastic cover.
