Hey guys, new to forum, got to watching the videos-lots of great info. Now I need some help. I have a 5spd 2001 Mazda tribute which I just bought fairly cheap. The only problem is that it is hard to shift into reverse. It also grinds when shifting into reverse but not the forward gears. Can someone give me direction as to where to start looking. Thanks.

I am no expert but the first thing I would check is the linkage from the clutch pedal to the transmission. (By linkage i mean the hydraulics and the linkage at the clutch pedal itself.) If that is good then I would check the condition of the engine and transmission mounts.
Hopefully it isn’t an internal transmission problem!
Easy thing to do is check the fluid and see if its burnt or low. Also see if the clutch is being fully engaged and disengaged

I’m also recommending that the fluid is at the correct level and of the correct type. If all of that is correct then you might check your clutch hydraulics for any leaks and also check the shifter linkage for any loose parts or problems there.
Thanks for the advice. I checked linkage and found that the shift cable where it connects to the link arm on the tranny has a lot of play in the bushing/grommet that is on the end of the cable. Does anyone know where to find just the link bushing? The cable from the dealer is almost $300.0 to replace. I was thinking salvage yard if I can find a newer than 01 Tribute. Might not have as much wear.
DrivewayalSounds like you might have found it. Unfortunately I don’t think they sell the bushings separately but you might try to make one of your own if you can, I’ve done it myself in the past. Other than that you might try looking on the internet for a supplier other than the dealer, just google the part # if you can get it from the dealer. Keep us posted.
