        Welcome to the forums !

Sounds like the new brake shoes are adjusted to far out. First- remove the drum and make sure the shoes are seat properly against the wheel cylinder and also against the adjuster. make sure the parking brake is off . next- turn the adjustment wheel on the adjuster so that the drum slides on easily. next you will need to adjust the shoes out so you have a ” slight ” amount of drag. with the drum on spin it by hand and feel for a slight drag. if no drag is felt remove the drum and adjust the shoes out slightly then replace the drum and spin it again. repeat this until you feel a slight amount of drag. with the drum on engage / disengage the parking brake several times. this should be it.

          Hi michaelbarone,

Yes, welcome to the forum! Check out EricTheCarGuy’s video on “How to Replace Drum Brake Shoes (Full)”. Check out the 14:00 time mark for the “star” or “wheel” adjuster. Hope this helps. Good luck and keep us posted.

i replaced the hardware and have the break adjuster at it smallest point. there was a problem with the right side before i did the break job. it looked like the wheel cylinder was’nt retracting when you took your foot off the break so thats why i replaced the wheel cylinder ,pads and drums.parking break is off too, well its in the down position. is it possible i have a master cylinder promblem. also watched the video too. great video!

Two quick thoughts come to mind. #1. Check and make sure that the longer of the two shoe pads is on the rear-facing side of the drum. The shorter shoe pad should be on the front-facing side of the drum. #2 Double check all the springs, clips, and star-adjustor for proper placement and fit. Let’s try to figure out why the drum is difficult to put on over the shoes. Keep us posted.

Did you match the new parts with the old ones?

There should be an adjuster as stated. Is your emergency brake engaged? Can you post any pictures?

If you suspect the wheel cylinder isn’t retracting you could try pushing in on the tops of the shoes to see if you can get it to compress, if you can’t then check to make sure the shoes are not hung up on anything and in particular check the rod that goes between the shoes to make sure it’s not causing it to bind because it’s not located in the correct place. It’s not common for wheel cylinders to stick like that but it is possible but check everything else first. Also make sure you have the shoes installed correctly and in the correct location.

If it was a master cylinder problem then when you opened the bleeder screws that wheel cylinder would have collapsed back as the trapped fluid escaped – so you know that’s not it.

Double check your work, compare it to the side that is working and see what’s different. You should never have to pound the drum back on – that’s almost guaranteed it’s not going to turn.

One last note – I did one brake job a long time ago where the cheap replacement shoes had friction material that was a lot thicker than what I expected, and there was no way the drum could be reinstalled. I had the drum machined and that created enough clearance to get it back together. Should not be necessary but that’s what I had to do once.
