So.., you do have power and ground at the starter when it wont crank?
You’ve got power at the solenoid wire too when it won’t start?
It has to be missing something when it won’t crank.
Keep us posted man, I hope it goes well for you.
PS: keep in mind that you could have a bad reman starter!!

Honestly, I would need a diagram to even begin to help you. The car may be new enough that a request is sent to the pcm to start the car when you turn the key, and when the pcm sees a high enough signal from the cam or crank sensor (meaning the rpm’s are going up) it will cut power to the starter. Older cars were just a straight shot from the ignition switch to the starter relay. If you aren’t comfortable working on an issue like this, I would ask your master tech to tutor you if he’s not a grouchy old man.

            +1 on beefy’s post.
There is no shame in asking for help now and then, we Don’t

You mentioned tapping on the starter and it made it work, but you have replaced the starter. Next time maybe you could try wiggling the wiring to the starter to see of that kicks it on.

Twiggy hit the nail on the head. Turns out the female spade connector inside the trigger wire was ever-so-slightly too big to fit snugly on it’s male counterpart on the starter solenoid. I dug through the miscellaneous electrical connectors that I had in my toolbox and found one that was a much better fit. I snipped the female connector off of the Toyota wiring and crimped on the spade connector that I had found. Wrapped it in electrical tape, since I’m out of heat shrink, reconnected everything and it all seems to work.

Fingers crossed that the repair holds, but it was working fine the last time I saw it.

Yup.., Most of the time when I get a intermittent no crank come in it’s just a connection.
                    Great job everyone!T-)

Yes! I was going to suggest checking the electrical connections, the next time you run into a starter issue like this the tests in this video should reveal a connection issue.
