I could see the alignment of the rear wheels being off with bent control arms. The camber of the tires could be out of specification, and cause extra wear on the rear tires. Just like bones in the human body, the body will be forced to compensate with something out of sorts. The same holds true for the vehicle.
As far as replacement, I would see what your mechanic thinks. If the funds are there, I would recommend the repair. Good luck and keep us posted.
Well the alignment makes since as what you said reminded me that when the cars tires were aligned last time the guy said that it was bent but he got it aligned to where the tires should be and it has been producing normal wear.
+1 on it effecting the alignment, you really need to know how much it’s loose our ‘out’ to make any real determination, perhaps this video can help you figure that out.
Well the car has all new struts/shocks and in the rear specifically when there is weight in the rear like with for example a couple passengers, then it makes a squeaky/bottoming out sound. That would be the best way that I could describe it without a video.
My wife’s Malibu has those same arms bent. I brought it into the shop where I used to work and threw it on the alignment machine – there was enough toe and camber adjustment that I was easily able to bring everything back into spec. Not saying that will be the case every time, but I didn’t feel that the car was worth dumping any money into as long as everything is safe and functional (it has 243k miles and is beginning to rust).
When you replaced the struts, did you replace the mounts? Malibu’s frequently have clunking sounds from the rear from 2 places: The rear upper strut mounts, and the rear sway bar bushes.
