Went to change the Fuel filter on my daughters 2003 explorer. The clips holding the 3 lines on the filter are red and attached to the line end. They apparently are not replaceable so I took the car to a shop to see what they knew. As the little plastic clip was broken He called Ford to see how to get new clips. Ford explained that you needed to order new fuel lines and that it entailed dropping the fuel tank itself in order to get to the other end of the fuel lines to change out the lines. I went to ford and talked to a parts guy that I have worked with before and he said that it often happens that when one of their mechanics is changing out the fuel filter and breaks one of these little plastic tabs they have to go thru the process I mentioned above and that it costs around $350. Just to change out the fuel filter if one of these Plastic tabs breaks off. I was floored. You have to be kidding me. It looks like you could just put a twist tie or something on it and call it good. Has anybody come across this stupid issue before??? Have any suggestions?

We had another post on here about this – i think it was on a Focus?

Anyway, the clips should be available in the aftermarket – here’s what I posted on the topic:

        Quoted From johnzcarz:

Doorman Products makes them – you should be able to pick them up at any parts store that carries their stuff (AZ, Advance, etc.).
If you look on page 3 of their catalog they list part numbers for them:

Found this website.look for boomer1956 the P/N for those clips is 2F1Z9A317BA hopefully this is what you need.
You may need to call a couple of dealerships.Good luck C8-) Try to google that P/N and see if thats your clip

            Welcome to the forums!

            +1 with the above posts.

Those clips can sometimes be found at any good auto parts store.

On my ford escape the clips came with new fuel filter…Depends on what kind u get.The Fram filters often come with clips, but not the right sizes.Purolator or OEM do come with the right size clips needed for the lines to clip onto the filter holding them on..

+1 on the above posts, I too have seen them come with a new filter. I also covered this in the Taurus Fuel Pump replacement video that I did.

Why not just use a universal in-line fuel filter with some rubber fuel line attached to each end and install it with hose clamps? It’ll basically do the same thing without making you replace the fuel lines and dropping the tank. Depending on the size of the filter, you might need to cut a bit off each side of the fuel line with a small pipe/tube cutter so that the universal filter will fit in there, but that’s what I’d do (especially given the age of the car.)

I’m not sure that’s a good idea. The original design is built to handle the fuel pressures for these fuel injected engines – it’s probably 50-70psi. and pass all sorts of crash safety testing as designed. I would be very careful about using a generic filter and then attaching hoses onto those steel fuel lines using hose clamps. If you ever get in an accident and the car catches fire you would be in a world of trouble.
