Hello everybody, I’m back with another question I forgot to post yesterday. My dad has a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ, with the regular 2.0 4-cylinder, and the check engine light is on with code P0456. I have cleared it a couple times with a scanner and it comes back after some driving. The gas cap is tight. There is no fuel leaking out it seems as there is none on the ground but there is a strong fuel smell when the car sits overnight but only when the tank is over 3/4 full and it goes away after it’s started and driven for a little. I have been keeping it below 3/4 tank and there is no smell and fuel economy is normal. With it filled completely, it seems like the first 1/4 tank goes really fast and is accompanied by the smell, and then is normal after that. Any ideas on where to look before having our mechanic take a look at it? Should I try replacing the gas cap first and then move from there? Thanks!

Many times with leaks like that you would need to have a service manual for the vehicle your working on and a smoke machine or equiviliant as you often need to fill the system with smoke and activate different solinoids and valves to isolate the leak as small leaks in the evap system can be hard to find. The service manuals often have steps to follow for the vehicle you are working on to find a leak like that.

+1 on the smoke machine and bi-directional scan tool. You could try doing a thorough inspection of the EVAP system and components and see if it yields any results.

I’ll just have him take it to the mechanic it’s no big deal. Just wondering if there was something easy to check before we did. Thanks for the help everybody!

You might try checking the tank and fill tube for leaks. It could have rusted through causing the leak. It can be hard to get a visual on those because of the location. Keep us posted.

Hey everybody, for some reason I did not get email updates on this thread, and I forgot I even posted it. I rediscovered it by chance.

Anyway the verdict was the gas tank needed to be replaced. Mechanic said there are small leaks in the top of the tank. My parents were ready to get a new car anyway, so he sold it to someone with the know-how to fix it so we no longer own the car. It was a great car and I’ll miss it but it’s in a good home.

                        I hope this helps someone!
