First make sure the “e”brake is fully disengaged. next I would spray around all the wheel studs with blasters. next- look at the backing plate. there should be an access slot that you can use to back off the auto adjuster for the e-brake shoes. keep us posted.

Hey guys, changing rear brake rotors and pads on a 2003 Montero Sport. Problem is the rotors are stuck. This has disc for the brakes with the e brake drum or “hat”. what is the best way to get these off. I am planning to heat up the drums and try pounding them with a hammer. Any other suggestions. I tried the screws in the rotor to push it out and the screw broke off. Do not know why they made the disc brakes complicated on this vehicle. First time I work on a Mitsubishi.

I wouldn’t use heat, I think some penetrating oil and a big hammer would work just fine. Does it turn by hand or are the parking brakes locking it up? If it is the parking brakes holding the disc on then you need to get the star wheel loosened to get the disc off. Spray some penetrating oil into the oval hole where the parking brake star wheel is and let it sit for a while. When I do my brakes I always clean the star wheel adjuster with a wire brush and apply Never Seez to the threads. Never have a problem adjusting the parking brakes again. I also put Never Seez on the contact points for the rear disc so it doesn’t “weld” itself with rust and comes off easily the next brake job.

I would hit it with some pb blaster and hit it with a hammer or do like they did in this video.

I agree with making sure the e-brake shoes are not stuck behind a rust ridge. Also make sure there is no screw holding the rotors to the hubs.

When you eventually remove the rotors, clean the hub with a wire brush or wire wheel and use a dab of anti-seize so this does not happen again C8-)

Hey guys, just to give you an update, the rotors were actually stuck to the hub, so I ended up using PB penetrating oil and a sledge hammer. E brakes were ok but I ended up replacing the rotors (obviously) and brake pads and calipers. The caliper pistons were seized and the pins were rusted, wire clip retainers in the back were broken. Seems like a fragile over complicated design for caliper set-up. The new calipers came with the hardware. Thanks.

That’s exactly what I was going to suggest you do, I too am not a fan of using heat in a situation like that but I have no problem breaking out the sledge. Thanks for posting your fix and for using the ETCG forum.
