      Hi
I drove my 2004 Grand Am with 218000 Km on it into town and dropped it off to the wife and when she left work the car wouldn’t start. 1 week before this happened I though I left the lights or something on when I had it in town because I had to boost the car to get it going, I put a new battery in. Thought it might be the security feature but the light is not on or blinking so I checked to make sure I had fuel and spark but still won’t start. I did a compression test just now and I have no compression in all 4 cylinders. Anyone have an idea what I should check next. Thanks

Maybe trying pulling the spark plugs and drying them off and then put them back in and try starting it again. If there is no compression then its possible thats its either wicked flooded or the timing chain broke as collegeman suggested. You could also remove the oil cap and take a look inside while someone cranks the engine, see if the valve train is moving which could help confirm a broken timing chain

I took the spark plugs out and checked to see if each cylinder was getting spark from the coil pak then removed the cover to check the timing chain and it all seems fine, The car does seem like it is turning over very easy. Thanks

How would I check to see if the timing chain has jumped?

as suggested you could try and look through the oil filler cap to see the rockers or
cam move. other wise remove the valve cover to see the above mentioned

The timing chain is not broke. Thanks

Any unusual sounds from the engine while you crank it, besides the fact that you said it cranks really fast?

also, it may not be a bad idea to try your compression test a second time. Now that its sat for a while just to make sure that the no compression issue isnt because of a flooded condition

does your car have the 2.2 ecotec engine? I believe that is DOHC so you could inspect to make sure neither one of them has jumped a few teeth. I believe you might have mentioned that already, I cant remember

I guess they do in fact have chains, not belts.

Yes the car has the 2.2 ecotec engine, located the IAV. When you remove the IAV does it come out in 2 pieces? never had this off before. The part the the electrial plugs into with 4 prongs on it came out then the valve itself came out. If it did jump a few teeth wouldnt it have made some kind of noise or stalled out on me while I was driving it into town? Thanks

If I take the cover off is there something on the chain that lines up with something on the cam shaft and crank shaft. Thanks

If you have access to an air compressor, you could try a leak down test to help nail down where the compression issue is

try putting the gas pedal to the floor while you try to start the car.
If that does not work check to see if the timing chain is not broken
                                  or jumped

It’s usually a mechanical failure that causes a problem like that but it’s rare that it would effect all 4 cylinders unless it had jumped time. I know you say you inspected the chain but it’s also important to make sure it’s in time. When you pulled the plugs were they wet? If so this could indicate that it’s flooded and if that’s the case you may need to dry the plugs and try again. Did you do a wet and dry compression test? If so were the wet numbers substantially higher? If so I would lean toward a flooded condition rather than a timing issue.
