    Okay here’s the poop.

I changed the spark plugs in my wife’s best friends 2004 Honda Accord and one of the plugs was lightly oil covered and the other five were dry.

At first I thought the oil was coming down the tube past the valve cover / coil seal but after looking online for the last two day’s I think the oil may be coming from the bottom of the tube.

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks

    Shawn

    Quoted From skim3544:

It is possible to get the oil through the cylinders only if your piston rings are so warn that it would pass the oil through. A piston ring (usually the bottom one) is responsible for wiping down the oil as the piston moves. But if your rings are warn enough, it will let the oil through and the air pressure will eventually shoot it through the spark plug seals. But in my experience most of the cars with this problem was due to leaking valve cover gasket. I had one car that was doing blowby but most of the oil was shooting up to the intake system and only the tips of the spark plugs were fouled.

I appreciate your input but the plug side is dry and it’s more of a oil that’s weeping in the spark plug tube ..this enging has over a hundred thousand mile on it and I’m thinking that I might have to pull that valve cover and look closer at the tube seal but I can’t find a exploded view of that area on the internet and I wanted to see how that assembly went together.

It’s not coming from inside the engine I can tell you that. It could be one of 2 things. Since that is an actual ‘tube’ that has a positive seal at the valve cover I don’t see too many leaks on these but on occasion I see the seals in the valve cover leak a little and over time can cause a small amount of oil to build up in the spark plug well, all you need do to fix this is replace the seals in the valve cover which can be tricky since they are ‘pressed in’ but it can be done and the parts are readily available.

The other possibility and I see this from time to time is that when someone filled the oil perhaps they spilled some on the valve cover near the spark plug tube and it went down into the well so if the tubes that have oil in them are near the oil cap this is also a possibility.

If you are positive that it is not coming from the top, then this could be due spark plug tubes leaking the oil into the hole through the bottom side. The bottom is usually mounted to the cylinder head with a gasket or RTV.

What did you do to rule out the valve cover gasket leak?

The surrounding area is dry and the only oil is in the Spark plug tube. and it’s not soaked yet..just oil covered and make’s me think that things will only get worse as time goes on.

I watched that video and if things get really bad I will pull the tube out and follow the video instructions.

But I need to find a exploded view for that area of the engine maybe Autozone’s will have something . Getting the Valve cover gasket set with seal’s ..Then it’s time to get dirty !

My first instinct was that the coil pack / spark http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/ … car046.jpg
has a seal and that it was leaking.

That IS true but it’s rare, I’m of the philosophy to go for the easiest solution first as getting those tubes out to reseal them can be a real challenge.
