1. How do you know if the noise is coming from the transmission? Maybe it is coming from half shaft or wheel bearing. You would need to do additional test to confirm that the noise is coming from the transmission
2. You really don’t know. If you do the test and it passes, then your clutch is fine (is working as supposed to). The engagement point has more to do with the pressure plate and slave cylinder.
3. Do you have check engine light on? For bad idles, I am suspecting either intake leak or cylinder misfiring. But if you can confirm this from CEL and pulling the engine code.

1. The point that stuck out to me was when the car is in nuetral, and i let up on the clutch, the noise comes back. So thats what leads me to believe its tranny related. How would i go about testing what is the cause?
Something like jacking up the front of the car and let it idle in 1st and try to pinpoint the sound?2. Sounds good, The car has 85k on it now, so im guessing its getting close :/
3. Nope,no engine codes. and the engine runs smooth as silk other then when it drops down to idle. Its very odd. Would a dirty MAF or throttle body cause that?
Thanks for the quick reply!
February 11, 2012 at 11:00 am #439189given the mileage of the car. its most likely the clutch is nearing its life span.as for the noise it sounds like the throw out bearing getting dried out.
as for the engagement if its hydraulic check the slave cylinder for fluid.if its mechanical check or adjust the cable. i think with the clutch getting close
to its life expectancy coming to an end.Tthe material is getting to thin. which is changing the engagement .good luck and keep us posted. C8-)February 11, 2012 at 11:00 am #439190Quoted From college man:

Hopefully when it does go it will slip very slightly for awhile to give me some warning that i need to do my first clutch job. Haha
Would the throwout bearing make noise while the clutch is engaged?February 11, 2012 at 11:00 am #439191Welcome to the forums!
I would first start off making sure you are using OEM fluid for that trans axle as if you use aftermarket types, you will change the shifting characteristics of the transmission.
For the idle issue, i would be looking for vacuum leaks. Cleaning the MAF with the correct cleaner is a very good idea.
Here are some video’s by Eric. The first is for checking for voltage leaks at idle –

The second is a power balance test to see if you can isolate a misfiring cylinder without the aid of a scan tool –

February 11, 2012 at 11:00 am #439192A+ on dreamers post for checking for vacuum leaks and doing a power balance test. C8-) as for the throw out bearing making noise with the clutch
engaged.it could.that throw out bearing lives in a harsh environment. also before you bought the car you don’t know how that clutch was driven.
you won’t be able to tell until you replace the clutch. good luck and keep us posted.February 12, 2012 at 11:00 am #439193If it’s 4wd you don’t want to have it in 4wd on dry pavement, this is the most likely cause of the ‘wheel hop’ you had. As for the noise it sounds like an input shaft bearing problem especially if it goes away when you push the clutch in. For this you will need to remove and disassemble the transmission to replace the bearing or take it somewhere to have it replaced.
February 12, 2012 at 11:00 am #439194I will for sure check for vac leaks this weekend, i did the power balance test and each cylinder dropped the rpm about the same.
@ETCG
Nope, just the FWD unfourtanately, haha . Thats exactly the conclusion i was coming to as well, after reading through some forums and watching videos etc. The only thing that still confuses me is that its not a smooth/consistent noise as i was hearing from other people, Its irregular at best. But heres to hoping that a new IPS bearing will fix it.
Im also guessing that this is a case of cheap part, expensive replacement? haha especially if im gonna do the clutch while theyre in there…
Thanks for all your help guys!February 12, 2012 at 11:00 am #439195Are you running a MIVEC or non MIVEC engine?
February 13, 2012 at 11:00 am #439196Its a non mivec engine, just the standard 2.0L.
Here is a video of the sound its making, listen around :53 seconds to hear the irregular noise I was talking about.

May 5, 2012 at 11:00 am #439197Hey everyone! Just a follow up,
It was the input shaft bearing, i tore down the car, replaced it, (with new clutch etc.), and it drives beautifully once again! I wanted to put some decent mileage on it before I confirmed it fixed.
That bearing was completely FUBAR. ive never seen a bearing that messed up. But a new shiny one has taken its place!
But if anyone else has that noise, you know where to look now! haha
Thanks again guys!
