I have this dodge neon, and the oil plug was in it so tight that my socket rounded the bolt off so then I tried vice grips no luck made the bolt worse not that I could fit anything on it anyway by that time. So i tried an easy out still no luck. And tried special lubricants still didn’t loosen up

        Quoted From 3SheetsDiesel:

Welding a wrench to the drain plug will make it worse, since you won’t be able to turn the plug enough times to get it out of the pan before the wrench runs into something. If memory serves, the drain plug is a 13mm.

I’ve got a 1996 Neon and I’ve always used the 1/2 inch 6 pt on it. 13 mm is close it may also work which ever has the least play.

I’ve got this tool and it is a good investment. Used it to remove some rounded bolt heads from my exhaust manifold at the gasket connection to the exhaust pipe. I also try and use 6pt sockets whenever possible to try and reduce rounding the bolt heads. Don’t own many 12pt You may want to try some heat on it before you try and get it off

Same here, 6pt is my first choice.

            Quoted From johnbkobb:

How many people really use a torque wrench of their oil plug? I’ve never done it.

I use a torque wrench on my oil and ATF drain plugs since the service manual lists the torque spec. Of all the bolts that I touch on my car, the oil plug is the one that I don’t want to see loosen on me.

Glad you got it out, as with many things auto repair is sometimes good and sometimes not so good but when you overcome something like that you get a little stronger in the process. As mentioned above good tools go a long way so if you’re going to be doing any amount of repairs it’s nice to have a good set of tools to work with.

Every bolt and fastener on any vehicle has torque specifications.

You would be surprised what some people do when you work in this field and service there vehicles.

                  Each to there own though.

I’ve been turning wrenches for 18 years or so, and have developed a ‘feel’ for most things, and one of the most common ones I have to pull myself back on is drain pan bolts. You really don’t need to kill it. The same goes for oil filters. In fact, if I found the last guy that oil-changed my Rav4 before I acquired it, I would have words for him about all the cuts on my fingers digging that filter out. Otherwise, if you are new to the game, I would suggest using torque wrenches if you have access to them, because you will be VERY surprised how little torque is needed for bolts/nuts that you think you are doing right. Just my opinion.

I know what you mean about over-torquing the oil filters. I bought a used car once that had the filter on so tight that using a cap wrench the metal can buckled and twisted in the center like a pretzel while trying to get it out. The problem was there was no access to use a strap wrench up close to the base, so a 10 minute job turned into a little project.
