So I replaced the driver’s side axle in my Accord after watching Eric’s axle replacement video (thanks by the way Eric!). Ever since I replaced it I notice a vibration when I go around 20 mph. It’s always at 19-21 mph, like clockwork, regardless of what gear I am in. When I installed the axle, which was new from NAPA, I made sure I pushed it in all the way (c-clip snapped in). I don’t know what is causing the vibration. The vibration is mainly felt through the seats, not through the pedals or steering wheel, and is slightly stronger on the driver side. Could it be a defective axle? Or what else could it be?

Was it a brand new axle or a reman?
It is possible you have a bad “new” axle.
Did you tighten the axle nut to the correct torque spec?
You might want to just recheck your work and see if anything is to loose or looks odd.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

          Welcome to the forums !

I would start with a good inspection of your tires. you may want to swap the tires front to back and see if the vibration changes/moves. make sure all lug nuts are properly torqued. I have heard of some people getting bad reman half shafts but can’t remember right now what brand. you could do a internet search and find that info.

+1 on checking the lug nuts..
Also make sure there is no rust or anything keeping the wheel from seating strait on the rotor.

I torqued the axle nut down to 181 lbs-ft. If I can nitpick, I did not torque it down in 2 or 3 increments (e.g. 60-> 120->181 lbs-ft). I did torque down the lug nuts to 80 lbs-ft. The axle was a MAXdrive axle from NAPA. It was advertised as new and they also sold remans for a cheaper price. The one I bought came with a lifetime warranty so I may go get another one and install it to see what happens.

Oh quick note! If you watch Eric’s axle replacement video, the original axle has this small joint in the middle of the axle half-shaft. The replacement one does not have this joint. My situation is the same. It seems like the joint is for dampening any impacts. Does anyone know for sure what the function of this joint is? Is it the lack of this joint that is creating this vibration?

Again something else I forgot to mention, the vibration is only when I accelerate through 20 mph or stay at 20 mph. It never happens when I’m slowing down and pass 20 mph. If I keep my car constant at 20 mph, I feel it, but once I let go of the gas it stops.

It still sounds like a cv axle problem to me.
I guess if you want to go ahead and put another one in.

I changed my passenger side with a reman axle, I was getting a leak but no noise, I put an aftermarket seal and everything is working so far. I bet is the axle, post your results. 93 civic LX.

Totally agree. It kinda sounds like maybe the axle isnt balanced properly or something. I would get another axle and see what happens

The ‘joint’ you mention is not a joint but a vibration damper, I’ve installed several without this damper and they were fine but it’s nice when they’re there. It sounds like you did the work properly and if that’s the case I would suggest taking the axle back and exchanging it for a new one as it sounds like it may be defective. BTW why did you change it in the first place?

I changed it originally because I had a loud clicking in the left front wheel when turning right. After I changed it the clicking went away. The vibration doesn’t seem that serious but I will go get the current axle swapped for another one. I probably won’t get time for a couple weeks because of summer classes. I’ll be sure to keep all of you posted when I do. Thanks for all your help!
