My car is a 2005 Kia Spectra5 with just over 138,000 miles.
A few weeks ago I had a CEL come on. Pulled the codes and had a P0420, P2626, and P0302. I’ve replaced the upstream O2 sensor and that fixed the P0420 and P2626 but the P0302 remained.
Next I replaced plugs and plug wires. Neither of those helped at all. I tried some Lucas Oil fuel injector cleaner next. That took what had always been a rough idle and smoothed it out so much that I had to check the tach to make sure the car was still running, even my wife noticed how smooth it was. However within 25 miles the CEL was back on with the same code.
Each time I reset the code I get a pending trouble code within 6-7 miles and then a CEL within 25. The freeze frame data varies, it happens randomly. Sometimes at idle, sometimes while coasting, sometimes on the freeway, there’s no consistency at all.
The next day rough idle was back, in fact it was really only smooth for the rest of that drive. I have run more Lucas Oil fuel injector cleaner through the car and now when I pull the spark plugs they are all a nice tan color whereas before the cylinder 2 plug was very white.
Most importantly I ran a compression test on all 4 cylinders. 1, 3, and 4 read about 180-190psi. Cylinder 2 read 145psi, I squirted a little 5W oil in the cylinder and it read about 148psi so am I correct in assuming that the valves are the issue? Is there anything I can do besides have a full valve job done?
