2005 Taurus wagon. Flex-fuel engine. 282,000 miles. “Fish-biting”. Repaired vacuum leaks. Replaced MAF sensor. Live scan still shows BARO at 24.0 in Hg or 7000 feet in elevation and I’m in Ohio (about 1000 feet above mean sea level)! Still “fish-biting”. Any suggestions for what to do next? Thanks for your help.

          Currently there is P0420.
Prior to that, P0171 & P0174 (lean bank 1& 2) and fixing the vacuum leaks cleared those codes, for now.

I am not familiar with “MIL”, so I’m not sure how to answer.

MIL stands for Malfunction indicator light. or engine light.

A P0420 is a code for catalyst Efficiency below threshold meaning your catalytic converter may be warn out or the 02 sensor after the cat may be warn out or the wiring to that 02 sensor may be shot.

maybe if that cat is bad enough its causing back pressure and bogging the engine down but i don’t know, i guess a good way to check that is to do a exhaust system pressure test…

also seeing your engine has so many miles i would also have a look at the spark plugs, fuel injectors, fuel pressure, or even compression to asses the health of your engine, not saying any of these things are the issue just something worth looking at beacuse it may be.

+1 Nailed it. I was going to suggest the same things. Also, if you don’t get any traction with engine performance, you might check the operation of the transmission. Particularly the operation of the torque converter clutch.

Noticed some spark leak from the plug leads. Changed plugs and leads. No help. RPMs top out at 1600 with brakes applied and full throttle. Now dropping out of overdrive with very slight increase in load. At 65 mph tach goes to 3100, but there’s no acceleration!?! Speed actually drops. Tranny was rebuilt about 100000 miles ago. Thoughts/comments?

Sounds like there may be more than one issue. Your problem may still be in the transmission, but it’s probably worth looking into what’s happening with the engine as well. More info on that here.
