      Hello,

      My wife car has a 30K Mi on it, the transmission fluid look brown and smells.

      Been advised to flush since it has low mileage still on it.

      I was thinking to perform the flush my self since I saw this video:

      The reason I don’t want to just drain

        Just drain and refill. Also I would not use synthetic – it is not always best for your car

          Im not a big fan of doing complete flushes. However your vehicle does have low mileage. You will have to make that decision yourself.

          I highly recommend going to the dealer and buying the correct OEM replacement fluid if you do decide on doing a flush or even just a filter change if your vehicle is even equipped with one.

            I would take the car back to the dealer. If it has 30k miles on it, it should still be under warranty I would think, right? My mom just bought a brand new Kia Sportage, and it has a 10 year/100k mile powertrain warranty.

            If the fluid is ‘brown’ after that low mileage, something might be up.

              wow brown fluid at only 30k miles…!!!
              Take it back to the dealer cause it should be covered.

                I don’t know if I have the same coverage, I will need to look into that.

                Im not having a complaint as of the powertrain, the car perform the way it should, but I was surprised as well from the color of the fluid.

                I went online and made some research and found out that a light brown color is normal(which is the case here), but I will take your advise into consideration no doubt here.

                I decided to go a head and buy ATF from the dealer and change the fluid, and then I will keep an eye on the car transmission and its condition(shifting, fluid etc) if I noticed any issues I will take it to them right away since I have plenty of time/mileage left to benefit from the coverage.

                Tomorrow I will go a head and get it done and updates my findings.

                Please keep sharing your ideas, I appreciate all of them.

                    I also agree that he brown color is normal and all that should be required is a fluid change so don’t bother with ‘flushing’ besides the best way to do that is with the proper equipment which the average DIY does not possess. Keep us posted on your findings after you change the fluid to me it sounds like you’re just due for regular service.

                      Ok,

                      Job is done, I dropped the pan, it was light brown which I think is normal as its due as Eric mentioned.

                      The only challenge was to figure out which is the input and output to the transmission cooler(I figured it out after making a mess) and since some fluid spilled out it was a challenge to know exactly how much fluid to put back.

                      The drain plug was almost clean really.

                      After all, the fluid was exchanged with a new one, looks the way it should, and the level is at full.

                      I drove it for 15 Mi on the highway and everything seems to be smooth and normal.

                      Being said, its really up to you if you just want to drain and refill or to exchange the whole fluid, be careful not to make the transmission go dry if you decided to go for a full fluid exchange, also put the oil pan underneath the car just in case the tube get lose as it happened to me 🙂 , its a good idea to have someone helping you turning on/off the engine once you are done.

                      As most of us know, this is be done to transmissions with low mileage or these ones serviced along the way. on high mileage drain and refill.

                        I did the flush the way that guy did it on the youtube video. the only difference was when I did it.I marked half and quart graduations on the 5 gal bucket
                        so I new how much came out and how much to put back. worked like a charm. your right it is a two person job. I also change my power steering fluid the
                        same way. except I dont start the car. put the car on jack stands return hose in bucket engine off. turn the wheel lock to lock. take out the graduated
                        amount and refill with same amount.engine off turn wheels lock to lock to refill and bleed air. the only other difference was the guy in the video takes
                        the supply line off and does it from there.leaving all that dirty fluid in the trans cooler and lines. when I did it I took off the return line which purges
                        all the way through the lines and transmission cooler. virtually replacing all the fluid. I used valvoline max life synthetic. which was nissan d and j friendly.
