The intermittent problems are usually a challenge to find but when you have a CEL light, it will make diagnosis a little easier.

I had a 2000 S-10 company truck that had intermittent long (very long) crank issues at about 5k miles. I took it to the dealer twice, and begged them to have a tech drive the thing home overnight, because it usually occurred in the mornings. They wouldn’t do it. Finally, after sending it back to the third time, the president of the company I was working for called and asked what they most likely causes were, and they said, ‘fuel pump or relay’. He said ‘replace ’em or my business goes elsewhere’. They did. Never had an issue again. Mind you, they could never get the truck to repeat the issue while they had it for a total of about 6 days, but money talks.

I’ve had at least 2 cars in my history where something similar has happened. One was a Cavalier that was going through O2 sensors like popcorn, dealer was just replacing them until on the 3rd go-around they found a leaking head gasket. Once they fixed that all was well – luckily it was all under warranty. The other car had a crankshaft sensor that was on it’s way out, took it in twice and they could not find anything wrong. Taking it home after the 2nd visit, less than a few blocks from the dealer, car stalls and wouldn’t not start. They came and got it, replaced the sensor and all was well.

Then again I’ve had dealers do a fantastic job on other stuff.

BTW – not to change subjects but we have been looking at getting an Equinox. Do you really get 32MPG out of it? Anything you particularly like or don’t like about the vehicle?

My father took his 2011 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in twice for for crappy headlights. Are not very bright with the high beams on and the dealership finally admited to it yesterday.Test drove and turn on the headlights, the high beams were very dim and said should not be this way.Looks like Chrysler is going to buy a couple new headlights. With the Equinox, you will buy a new spindle when a front wheel bearing goes out.The tolerance between the wheelbearing and spindle is very tight, will bend the spindle taking the wheelbearing out with a press.
