I am now dissecting the heads on the 302 (full disassembly is in the Repair Central forum).

Again, I am a novice at this, so naturally, when I viewed the valves, I couldn’t help but notice a marked difference in the valves on the far right. The exhaust valve is a dark red, almost brick like, while the intake valve is a tannish color.

So what has been going on in that cylinder?

it looks like oxidation probably from coolant. or you had no compression on that cylinder. burning oil and spraying raw gas in there.

          +1.

You can also use some water and pour it into the combustion chamber and see if any fluid leaks past the valves. That will let you know if the cylinders have been sealing correctly.

The water jackets in the head look heavily oxidized also.

I would say it’s due to heat, look closely at the coolant passages near that cylinder which show more deposits and discoloration than the other ports. This could mean that it had a coolant leak into that cylinder as suggested but perhaps there could be an issue with the coolant jacket near that cylinder causing it to run hotter than the other cylinders.

Come to think of it, that is probably the cylinder that had the blocked passages on the coolant ports. I have a pic of it under the 302 rebuild in the Repair Central forum. That would make sense for that cylinder to be running hot and hence, the discolored valves.

              Thanks for the update.
