      Hi, new member here. Looking for advice.

      98 T&C Lxi died during acceleration at slow speed. Followed basic clues & did the following:

      Replaced in order:

      ASD relay, coil, alternator (fusible link had signs of overheating), Cam position sensor, Crankshaft Pos sensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, and finally Powertrain Control Module. Battery is good. After PCM replacement, security lights flashed when locking van. Figured it might be a security handshake with the PCM. Any ideas?

        Any codes stored in the computer? Is the security light flashing when trying to start?

          No codes. Flashing lights only happened when locking vehicle after new PCM was installed. Basically, engine cranks, but no ignition.

            I’ve recently had issues with this on Barbara’s van. I noticed that the wiring going to the ignition switch would cause the door chime to go on and off when I wiggled it. I suspect this was the cause of the intermittent no start. She also suspected an issue with the instrument cluster which I will be addressing in a future video.

            Also, when diagnosing no starts, it’s best to take a diagnostic approach to find out what’s missing before replacing parts. More info here.

              Actually, I did take a diagnostic approach. I have also been working on vehicles since 1965, and was an Air Force technician for 14 years on Aerospace Ground Equipment. I practically digested the entire Chilton manual for the vehicle, and made the tests that were available to me. The manual leaves something to be desired. I replaced each part only after I worked my way through the fuel and electrical systems, finally ending up with the PCM when all other apparent options were exhausted. The folks at AutoZone said that the PCM is fully programmed and ready to install. I only mentioned the security system because there was no light flashing before it was replaced. Unfortunately, I can’t know for sure what the PCM does with the information it gets from the sensors. I am sure there is more that I could do, so we are not giving up. We will hit it again tomorrow. My experience tells me that banging on the dashboard is not a good idea; so we won’t be doing that.

              I will be messing with the crankshaft position sensor tomorrow. When I removed the old one, it had apparently been glued in for some reason. It also went in a bit loosely. The Camshaft position sensor is essentially the same hall effect transistor with a different mount. It went into the vehicle firmly. Either sensor will cause the Automatic Shutdown Relay to de-energize.
