Still working on my 97 Acura CL rebuild project and right now seem to be going through seal by seal getting rid of all the oil leaks (which seem to pop up immediately after putting Synthetic Oil in it – refilled with Honda 5-30 synthetic blend).
Just finished replacing oil-pan with a hairline crack and so far so good…

Noticed there is some dampness on the lower half of the distributor mounting bolts – classic distributor O-ring.

Question: When replacing this oil ring, can I just scribe a line (or use a Sharpie) to mark the distributor and re-align when re-installing? Or, do I need to go through the effort of resetting the timing to be absolutely perfect?

      Thanks

I would try to use a marker and use a line as a point of reference, same too with the rotor and the base of the distributer.

If the leak does not go away after replacing the o-ring, then that means the internal distributor shaft seal is bad. The only way to fix this is to get a new distributor because usually the old seal has worn grooves on the sealing surface of the shaft.

Sometimes high quality synthetics can expose bad seals because they start to clean out what the other oils left behind. The seals were already bad, the good oil just exposed the problem. Also any of the oils labeled “high mileage” usually have some kind of seal sweller additives to prevent leaks, but at the end of the day it’s just a bandaid. Seals go bad on cars and they need to be replaced. It’s not the oil’s fault. Good luck.

So, is it “good enough” to just mark the distributor and re-align? (and let the ECU adjust the timing)?

Or, is it worth it to go through the process of setting the timing?

            Thanks!

              The marking idea will work.
That said, timing is not to hard. May want to give it a try so you feel more confident.

I use a scribe line most times, marker can wipe off but if memory serves I don’t think that distributor is adjustable anyway, if the holes aren’t slotted at the fasteners I wouldn’t worry about it as the timing is not adjustable and set by the ECU.

Thanks Eric – The holes were slotted slightly (this is a 97), so good thing I marked it. Used a Sharpie and also scribed a line for good measure.

Aligned everything as good as I could and it started right up. I guess the ECU will make whatever slight adjustments from here.

                  Thanks again for the feedback.

Thanks for the update. Don’t forget to change the traffic light to ‘Green’ if the issue is resolved C8-)
