Accord – oil catch can?

While working on my 2.4L ’03 Accord this summer I found the intake manifold coated with black gunk about 1/8″ thick.

Asking on the Honda forum I find this is caused by the PCV system routing crankcase fumes throught the intake to be reburned.

Oil catch cans are best used for Turbo applications. If you have excessive carbon build up on your intake, you may have excess engine blow-by. I would make sure the factory PCV system is working correctly.

Has it had a PCV valve lately?
They are cheap enough if you just want to go ahead and replace it as maintenance.

If the crankcase fumes are being routed to the intake, it seems to me that this indicates the valve is working correctly.

            Is this not it’s function?

That is correct, however if you have excessive carbon build up, you may have excessive blow-by.

Do you know the history and maintenance of the vehicle?

A catch can will help reduce oil consumption through the PCV system. I have one on my GMC Sierra 5.3 as they are notorious for using oil through the the PCV system. If you do go ahead and decide to do it – buy a nice one that has an oil seperator in it, or it is basically a useless add on. The one I have has a canister inside with stainless steel mesh that seperates the oil from the air. Everyone once in a while I check it and they is maybe an ounce of oil or so.

Thank you! If your engine is worn out catch can or not it’s not going to make a difference. The buildup you’re talking about is the result of a worn out engine, address the cause not the symptom. If it were me I wouldn’t worry about it and just keep putting oil in when needed, if you want a clean engine buy a new one and take care of it other than that you’re wasting your time and money in my opinion.

Well I put one on, based on information I found on driveaccord.net where several guys put them on new cars and were collecting oil in the cans.

Also, while I had the head off of mine I took it to the machine shop where they checked it over and said all was good – 105K on the clock and A-OK. I therefore think the car is not poorly maintained or worn out. Fumes from the crankcase are normal, and this is why the manufacturer puts a vent hose from there to the intake.

I purchased one that has a clear tube up the side so you can see how much is in the can. After several months there is now maybe an inch of oil in there (it is slightly smaller than a soda can), and the oil is clean.

Based on this experience I think this is a good way to keep your intake from getting gunked up, and pushing more burned oil fumes into your catalytic converter.

This all applies only if you have a car that you think you will drive for a long long time.

Just because the head is good does not always mean the short block is mechanically sound. Did you ever do a compression test?

Using OEM parts for your PCV system and ensuring is functioning correctly will aid the reduction of carbon build up in the intake.

105k miles and that much oil going thru the PCV seems like alot to me, especially for a Honda. You said after several months, you had an inch of oil in the can about the size of a soda can. Your original post was in November, and it’s now January. That’s <3 months. As suggested by dreamer, I would do a compression test. Or, if you aren't terribly pressed about it, I would do as Eric says, and ride it til it explodes.

I was thinking the same thing. Blow-by is ring related, not something on the head.

Don’t ignore the bottom end or say things like “I think” when it comes to it’s condition. You can very easily perform a compression test or better yet a leak down test to see what kind of shape the rings are in, if they are worn as I suspect (I’ve seen it more times than I can count) your ‘catch can’ is a waste of time, you need to look at the ‘big picture’ and not narrow your focus to things you ‘think’ are true, test and confirm if you want real answers and real results.
