      Hi there, I’m a newbie with what is probably a very common problem. No AC. Even though I’m in Canada, it’s a hot year and I wouldn’t mind getting some cool air for the summer.

      Previously at a mechanic, they told me that the AC compressor clutch needed replacing as the clutch never engages to spin the compressor. The fans come on when the AC is on so there’s no issue there. The AC system has pressure in it and the mechanic topped it up with refrigerant. I have a shop manual for my particular car and decided to look at it myself to save a few (hundred) bucks. I’ve determined with a feeler gauge that the clearance between the pulley and armature plate is good (was at .014″). The clutch itself doesn’t look bad, there’s nothing visually that throws up red flags.

      I checked the field coil resistance and it measured 4.5 ohms. The shop manual mentioned that it should read between 3.15 to 3.45 ohms. Would this be the case of the clutch not engaging? I don’t know what effect being that far out of spec has. Is there other tests I should do while I’m in there?

      The car in question is a 2006 Acura CSX (basically a Honda Civic that is sold in Canada). It’s a 5 speed manual, with about 256,000 kilometers (almost 160,000 miles).

        I dont have the wiring diagram but becarefully you should beable to check to see if it is getting power.. just be careful you have moving parts and your clothing or wires and get tyed up in the belt… also you should be able to hot wire the cluch to see if it engages it self…

          Would using jumper cables off the battery and rigged up to the coil be a good idea to test to see if the clutch engages? (With the car not running)

            I just push on it with a stick, if it engages then the clutch is weak.

              Okay, so I tried to push the clutch in with a stick and it wouldn’t engage. I pried with a stick against the side of the inner fender. Is it safe to assume that the clutch is bad? Should it be easy to push in and engage?

                Unplug the connector to the compressor and see if it is getting power and ground,

                  I think the resistance is ok for your clutch at 4.5 ohms.

                  Try back probing the connector to the clutch to check for voltage when the AC should be on. Don’t unplug it when you make this measurement. If there is 12V going to the clutch, try removing the clutch plate and wire brushing the clutch surfaces and slightly reducing that air gap- having the same issue as you that is what fixed the AC on my 2008 Honda Civic which is still working fine a year later.

                  If you don’t have voltage to the clutch try checking the relay for the clutch.
