I have been searching all over the net on how to install a Block Heater for a 2003 Honda Accord V6 – Not ONE – I have seen just a small hand full of older cars but nothing for mine. I just replaced the battery with an Interstate Mega-Tron Plus but I’d like a little bit extra – Is it even needed? It must be rare that anyone installs them? Maybe Eric or someone else has a video that I just haven’t found yet. Or at least some pictures as to where the heck it goes. Or should I just take it to the dealer and have them do it. I guess they want like 130 bucks to put one in, the part alone is about 65 bucks for OEM.

They aren’t rocket science really. That being said last year when I had the top of my engine off I managed to completely forget to buy and install one! ARG!

On the back of the block will be a couple of frost plugs. Pull one out, install the block heater, route the wire neatly out of the way and then out the bottom of the grille. Done.

You will need to drain the coolant from the engine side of the cooling system. Doing this in winter sucks. I’ve done too many coolant related jobs in cold garages or in car ports. You end up soaked and freezing!

not needed on a gasoline engine as long as your antifreeze is at
the correct ratio for your climate.

It depends on outside temperature. If it’s like -30c/-22F you will need it or at least not having it will severally reduce engine life.

Most of us don’t live where you require a block heater to keep an engine from freezing up. Espessially a gasoline one. Where it is nice is on those cold days where its not quite cold enough that the engine is a cube of ice but it certainly wont start blowing warm air for quite a while inside.

Another good method, more so to keep oil from being grease is an oil pan heat pad. Back home – Southwestern Ontatio- I used to leave it plugged in all night, even if I was parked in a garage. It didn’t help it warm up inside at all but I could just about start it and go without worry that the engine oil was too thick to do anything.

All I can say is once it warms up here and its spring spruce up time my car will get a block heater finally, and probably the heated seat kits I wanted but couldn’t afford! Its not the coldest place in the Pacific North West but the dampness gets you to the bones!
