I have five types of gloves in my garage.
1) 5 mil Nitrile disposable gloves,
2) general duty leather work gloves like these,
3) the “dotted” mesh gloves like these,
4) a pair of Mechanix gloves, and
5) Perhaps my new favorites, Wells Lamont nitrile-coated work gloves that I found at Costco. 12 pairs came in the box. EDIT: I just found them on Amazon also.

I used to feel that way too. Kinda like condoms, LOL. But, now I consider them just as important as any other tool. They prevent a range of injuries to the hands, practically eliminate skin exposure to chemicals, not to mention making for cleaner hands and fingernails after the job is done.August 2, 2015 at 10:01 pm #836222I’ll wear leather gloves when brute force and profanity are the order of the day. Otherwise, I work naked. Bare-handed, that is.

I have no issues with that,I can use the parts washer bare handed without a problem.August 3, 2015 at 4:05 am #836250

Have no use for them, can’t feel a thing wearing them.
I think that it is interesting that I read so much about mechanics concerned about being able to physically do the work and declining health after years in the field but so many people also have so little regard for chemical safety and taking care of their own body at work.
I am a big fan of the cotton gloves with the little traction knobs on them myself.
I use those and nitrile gloves mostly. I use the thicker 7 or 9 mil ones usually because I work with lots of stuff that is hard on the gloves. However, I think I am going to try those nitrile coated ones you posted for heavy work; they look pretty awesome.
August 17, 2015 at 6:35 am #837158I use the shop supplied nitrile gloves most of the time. It took some time to get used to and sometimes I still go dirty when you just need to have that extra feel. I also keep an old beat up pair of non name brand mechanics gloves for those times when you just have to grab something hot or sharp.
Last year I developed exema (likely spelt wrong, the overly dry skin condition) on my hands and it was horrible. Whenever something like coolant got on my hands, it was to the point where I could feel it burning. I even resorted to using some prescription steroid creams to try and cure it. It helped the bad areas but couldn’t or wasn’t practical to solve the greater issue. So I forked out for my own gloves that I used when I was going to be handling something nasty, like packing bearings or coolant. That helped. It also took a good week to actually get my hands thoroughly clean.
Now I’m somewhere else that supplies nitrile gloves, no more exema except for in the winter when it’s -40 and dry as hell and my hands are pretty much clean all the time.
