We techs spend a lot of time on our feet.
How important is footwear to your productivity at the shop?
How do you go about choosing your work boots?

I go with steel toe sneaker-type work shoes. I like my feet to breathe and I don’t see a practical reason to need full-on boots. I’ve tried a lot of shoes, including $100+ brands like Snap-On and Timberland Pro. I find that my feel will make a shoe gross over time, no matter the quality. I’ve settled into buying Wal-Mart $35 deals every six months. I buy nice aftermarket insoles when I get the new shoes, and then replace them after a couple months. When the 2nd pair gets nasty I replace the shoes which works out to about 6 months. They get pretty worn and gross on the outside by that point as well.
You can go with pretty much any type of shoe in the shop, you just want the steel toe for kicking lift arms and junk parts around and if something falls on your foot. The overall foot safety hazard level is pretty low, especially compared to the factories I uses to work in before being a tech.
September 4, 2015 at 9:41 am #838410I have tried Red Wings 3 times they hurt my feet and the problems are in they way they are manufactured. I have tried on almost all the major brands for work boots one can think of Red Wings (obv), Wolverine (Go to boot), Caterpillar, Chippewa, Timberland Pro (own 1 pair), Carolina, Bates (own multiple pairs)
Wolverines are by far the best for me. These are the exact pair i get Raider Steel-Toe EH 8″ Work Boot They last me about a year. I replace the insole once during this time. After the year the tread is normally torn up on the bottom. The inside where my foot does contact the boot tends to wear out as well. I also wear 2 pairs of socks though I do that with any boot. It helps add an extra layer of padding.
They would last much longer if I was not climbing on lugnuts, sharp metal edges, etc. (Big Rig Tech) This is what chews up the sole so fast. They actually feel like sneakers. The steel toes actually work extremely well as I have been the unwilling participant of more then a few tests. Also the EH has insulated me more then a few times for shock.
Bates are good for a non-shop work environment and they also allow your feet to breath more.

Bates are nice. I used them to get ready for Ranger school. To be clear I ended up never going.
September 6, 2015 at 11:38 am #838565I wear Dakota 8 inch work boots. I’m on my 3rd set of the same boot. They don’t last much more than a year, by the end they usually just start to fall apart and are so worn out that I just can’t wear them. I buy expensive shoes for outside of work, but when it comes to being on my feet for 8 or more hours, I personally find a sturdy pair of work boots so much more comfortable than “runners”.
October 9, 2015 at 9:11 am #841228i wear carhartt slip ons best boots i have ever had.
October 28, 2015 at 9:59 pm #842946I wear White’s Smoke Jumper boots. And wouldn’t wear anything that wasn’t custom made for my foot. Once you step up to customs you’ll never go back. I once heard it said that the two things you spend money on in life is your boots and your bed. Because if your not in one your in the other. Ive tried all sorts of boots and have found everything in the under $400 range completely unusable when your on your feet 12 hours a day. A good pair of White’s, Nick’s, or Wesco’s will last you years and are rebuildable. Ther is absolutely nothing like a pair of American made all leather boots made specifically to your foot. Save up and buy the best.
October 29, 2015 at 12:23 am #842967I tried on so many brands and I like Redback now.I have a pair of their workboots and shoes.Got them through my Matco tool dealer.Great thing is their work boots and shoes are not Chinese made,100% Australian owned and made. They do have a website also where you can order them from also.My dad is not easy to get workboots for, most stores don’t stock the wide sizes at all.
