Just wondering if anyone else out there has pulled off the white plastic water shield under a Honda or Acura interior door panel and found it kind of difficult to get off. Are you supposed to pull it off or cut it off? Was it just hard because I was doing it in a cold garage or because it has been on since the factory put it on in 2005 or a combination of both? It was difficult to get off without tearing it, but I only pulled it back just enough to get the lock/actuator out so I didn’t have to do the whole thing. I had read some other blogs where some were saying to take a razor blade and slice through the adhesive between the plastic and the sheet metal, but that seems like it would be difficult to do also and not cut the plastic. The adhesive would not stick again and is that normal? I purchased some of the actual genuine Honda adhesive for these water shields that you apply with a caulking gun and that worked great for reinstall.

It’s normal. Normally I use glue bead to pull it if partially. Normally it will stick back on with same clue but if not ad some.

Fast curing (paintable) body seam sealer is exactly same stuff. Not body panel glue but non hardening seam sealer. And plastic is same as the one used for houses.

I bought it recently from this online Honda/Acura dealer. They do not charge for shipping so you can get a tube for a caulking gun for about $10.00.

              Here is the part number:

              08712-0003

The stuff is actually made by a company up where I am at in the Chicago area called Daubert Chemical company. I found that out when I pulled off the Honda label on the tube.

Yea that’s the way it is, a PITA. I often take a razor blade to it to help the process. I just make small cuts in the sealant as I pull the vapor barrier away from the door. This also makes it easier to reattach after I’m done. You don’t need to add more normally, you can often just reattach it if the plastic is intact. It being cold doesn’t help either. Good luck.

                  Eric,

Yes, pulling it back was a PITA. You would think they could come up with something better than plastic glued down with adhesive for door panels, but I guess it has been that way for years on all makes. All I was trying to do was replace the interior door handle on my 2005 Acura TL and I broke that flimsy green Honda connector on the end of the door handle cable. So what should have been an hour job ended up taking much longer since I had to learn how to take out the lock/actuator to replace the cable with that green connector and deal with that plastic water shield. At least the cable was cheap ($5.00) and I learned something! I have read some other blogs where people will talk about how flimsy those Honda green connectors are and will break them pulling a door panel off on Hondas and Acuras. The Acura shop manual even had a warning that they can be broken if you are not very careful, but I still broke mine after reading the warning.
