So, you go out to your beautifully restored Chrysler car from the 1980s, but when you open shut the door, the window falls down about halfway! You turn the car on, but the window won’t do anything when you hit the switch! Oh no!

How you can fix this, as I have, is not too hard. First, you remove the door card. On a Lebaron coupe or convertible, there are screws in these locations:

After all of the screws have been removed, it’s time to remove the door card. I would recommend removing the battery to avoid being shocked for this step. Pull the door Power lock switch plate up and unplug the connector. Take a picture so you know how to put it back on. Then, pop out the window switches. The whole assembly comes off of the trim with two screws. Pop off the door handle trim, being careful not to crack it. Now, you can get to removing it. Start pulling on the door card. There are clips on the sides and bottom. Once you have it off, unplug the light and feed the cables through the card. You can now store this in your trunk or backseat. Now, remove the plastic glass break guard. Gently pull off the tape and feed the cables through the slits. Locate the window motor. It’s held in by 3 bolts. Remove these, with somebody holding the window for safety. When you get to the last bolt, hold the motor from underneath. You can now unplug the motor and slide it through a hole in the door. You can, after making sure the connectors are not touching or shorted, reconnect the battery. Plug in the motor outside of the door frame (with it’s connector), turn the car to the on position, and test it out. You should see the gear slipping. With the heavy window connected, it usually won’t spin at all. It also won’t stay stopped, so the window will fall. You can either try replacing the gear to see if that works, but a gear redo kit, or just replace the motor. If you replace the motor, the only product that includes the gearbox is the Doorman 742-30X. The 305 for the driver’s side and the 304 for the passenger’s side. Bolt the motor in once it’s been repaired/replaced, plug it in, and test it out! You should see that your window works perfectly now.
