I own a V40 04’. The engine lately has started to make this clicking/ticking sound that is quite loud. It only happens when the engine is at operating temp, and its not in gear/the clutch is in. Sound goes away with just about any throttle
What could this be?

Oil levels are fine
It sounds like bad news. It sounds like something from the top end of your engine is causing that noise. It would require a visual inspection after removing the valve cover to see what went wrong.
