2008 pontiac grand prix, 3800 series III L-26 engine

the car will be running like a top and then just randomly shut off like i turned the kea, plug the scan tool in and i get the following codes engine light turned on Codes thrown P-0606 P0601 and code relating too loss of communication with the throttle control, apparently this happens some time? as the codes pretain too a internal error with the PCM? i turn the car off and let it set for a few seconds then turn it back on it starts right back up and runs like nothing has happened…

i do have a cold air intake installed with MSD super conductor wires but i do not notice any moisture or water in the area where the PCM is no dirt no water no ice and people use the MSD wires all the time and have no issues, when i was the car i plug up all holes too insure no water gets in, the PCM is dry… is there still a possibility that there is corrosion on the connections? this has happened several times, 3 times in fact…

i am going too try too clean the connections too the PCM some way, any suggestions?

ooh and i have also checked the connector too the throttle body, no moisture or dirt or anything… blew it out the best i could but i doubt it would make any difference beacuse there wasn’t anything in there too begin with…

I am thinking it is the electronic throttle control because i here this is quite the common issue with the series III 3800… and as there is also a code that reads something about loss of communicaiton with electronic throttle control… code U0107

sorry for the delayed response everyone

thanks for your tips you pretty much lined up with what i was thinking.

i heavily inspected the harness that went from the PCM too the throttle body and all wires are in good shape nothing seems too be out of place, when the car is running i can aggressively wiggle the harnesses and it does not cause the car too shut off or “lose communication with the throttle actuator.” as the wonderful code U-0107 states so i went with the cheep fix first… i checked all the connections on the PCM and throttle body for corrosion and found none and cleaned connections the best i could with a electrical connector spay, this did not work

so i went with the most common fix since i figured it cant be the PCM as the car still runs most of the time its just randomly shutting off and i can re start it some 60 seconds later… i replaced the throttle body, and the car ran better afterwards with the new throttle body, but no fix, the car did it again shutting off and the desplay telling me starting disabled due too electronic throttle control.

next i will clean as many grounds and connections as i can and see if that works, we will see, dont think its the PCM, at least i am hoping not but i am getting the codes P-0601 AND P-0606

I think you might be looking at a pcm issue.

yep… did some more reserch and thats what i was figuring too, there is a post on the Pontiac Forum that a owner of the a pontiac a little older is having the same codes and the same issue and he had too replace the PCM… luckly its not that expensive and i can still drive the car.

after doing more research i also found these… apparently this issue is more common than i thought, these three links go too car forums where members are posting behaviors from there vehicles that are almost exactly the same as mine, while driving the engine shuts off, the data display tells them starting disabled due too some sort of electronic throttle control issue, and most all of them throw codes for P-0601 P-0606 and U-0107 and all of them required PCM replacement in order too remedy the issue.

i have also re titled my thread so this may be more helpful too those experiencing the same issue, may others use this as a learning experience 🙂

alright everyone sorry for the late reply, the PCM has been replaced and that fixed the problem, i have not had a issue since the replacement of the PCM. thanks for your guys help, hopefully this thread will be helpful too others too.

apparently the newer PCMS are a little more sensitive than the older big aluminum boxed PCMs in the older GM vehicles… a mechanic i talked too said he has had too replace several of them.
