I need you guys to shoot holes in my plan. 2003 Nissan Frontier 163K 2.4L manual.

It popped a P0456 as a pending code (evap very small leak). If it should become an active code (and I don’t have a smoke machine) I’m thinking about this as a way to rule out hoses, o rings and the gas cap.

Plug off the output of the purge valve and plug off the vent from the vent valve
Put about 10-20PSI in through the service port with a bicycle pump
Spray things down with soapy water to see if there is any leakage

Anyone see an issue with this plan? Could I put more pressure in the evap system? From my research most are saying it is a gas cap of the seal between the vent valve and the canister. Just want to make sure and not fire the parts cannon at the issue.Worst case is I need to take it in for a smoke test.

      Thanks.

FYI, DYI smoke machines are fairly simple to make for cheap.

        As to:
Put about 10-20PSI in through the service port with a bicycle pump
I wouldn’t suggest it for a number of reasons.

Might suggest you inspect the gas cap seal and seat on the filler neck.
If dirty etc, clean them both then apply some silicone grease to help ensure a good seal.
Then see if the P0456 returns.
        FWIW,
I get that code every few months, after I clear it, I wont see it again for 2-3 months.
So I assume it happens when I fuel up and the gas station doesn’t always secure the cap properly.
Now I double check it most of the time.

          Two important points:
EVAP test pressure is ONE PSI. Two max. Put 10 in there, and you will be sowwwy.
Smoke machines are $65 on eBay.

thanks all. I have looked at the gas cap, it seems OK but I might try cleaning it and teh filler neck. I have to admit that evap is one of my weaker areas of understanding.
