Help please.i have a 1982 454 model 350 which only turns partially. I thought a valve was stuck open so I removed the heads. The fuel pump and fuel pump push rod have also been removed. Still I can only rotate the flywheel part way before it stops with a hard metallic clunk. The heads are off,the rods are out,the lifters are free, what am I missing? Can a damper plate prevent the engine from turning or anything external? I’ve not heard of main bearings having this as a symptom? Any ideas? Thanks for your help

I am asking you if maybe a crankshaft journal is too tall hitting inside of the motor block. Is it the right crankshaft and whatnot.

          Broken timing chain?

It could be a broken connecting rod wedging against the block. Had the same situation on my lawnmower, when I went in for a look I could see that the piston was not moving when I turned the crankshaft.

The engine was running if I poured gas in the carb. I replaced the fuel pump and carburetor I tried to start it again and it sounded very metallic and ground to a halt. Never actually started.

Would the cam shaft turn? I hand turn at the flywheel and all the pistons move and all the lifters move. The Whole Top Is Off The motor. It still stops in the exact same place.

All the pistons move up and down. The heads are off and everything appears to move about 300 degrees maybe a little more

If the top end of the motor is off and you can’t rotate the
engine fully. Either something is broken in the bottom end
and wedged the crank or as suggested check the timing chain.
Remove the timing cover and the oil pan. sounds like new motor time.

I keep hearing timing chain? When I turn the flywheel the camshaft also rotates, I thought this wad controlled by the timing chain?doesn’t that automatically reason the timing chain is ok? 454 Big blocks are not manufactured any longer so just getting a new engine is not always an option.besides I’m stubborn and would rather rebuild it. I am just looking for some direction but it doesn’t seem there is much direction other than crack open the block and start rebuilding. Thanks for all the responses.

It’s possible that while you were pouring gasoline into the carburetor to keep it running that you poured too much and hydraulic locked it and bent a connecting rod.

Removing the oil pan and inspecting will tell for sure.

Can a connecting rod get bent with the starter power only?

Yes…they usually make a loud “POP” when they do bend.

There was no “pop” just a screech as the starter tried to turn the engine over. this stopped and the engine has not done a full rotation since. I also thought maybe a broken ring fell in the case and is wedged in a bad way.?

Something is stuck or hitting. I could sit here and guess every moving part left in the block but the answer is you are going to have to look until you find it.

Sorry if this isn’t much help. On the other hand, once things are far enough apart where you can see and hear, and can move the crank against the contact point, it should be obvious.

Let us know what you find.

Is the starter still installed ? if so remove it. see if the motor then turns freely. ive seen starts fail with the bendix seized in the forward position and this will lock up the flywheel.

Sounds like something is either broken or in the wrong place in the bottom end. You might want to drop the pan and inspect the crank and piston rods. Also, check the torque converter bolts. If one worked loose, it may have backed out far enough to make contact with the block.

                                    Keep us posted.
