      Hi Eric,

Was just sitting here thinking about the materials and components that are available in today’s (and recent years) most popular daily runners, so to speak.

Now I know you have a full-on schedule this year, but maybe next year, if this topic interests you and might interest your viewers, maybe you could make a video that addresses (compare and contrast) the materials (or different systems) of today’s cars.

For example: I am faced with a future valve cover replacement on my 1997 Saturn SC2, which I am planning to do myself. I currently have a plastic valve cover, which I am told can warp and cause the oil leak that I am currently having (along with the age and material of the old gasket). So I was on eBay to see if I could find an aluminum valve cover that might fit (from the 91-95 vintage Saturn) and would give me years of good service (hey, I am optimistic).

Timing belt vs. Chain-Is it true Honda is returning to timing chains? And what materials are those timing belts made or what are the pros and cons of each? Do European car manufacturers use something different?

Gasket materials-I think there are a couple of choices in some applications. Which one is best? I have seen plastic, cork and metal. What applications require which materials?

What about the different ignition systems, say distributor vs. distibutorless. COP (Coil on Plug) is another type, right? What others are there? Is one better, more reliable or cheaper to fix than the other?

Well I think you are getting the picture.

I am thinking this information can continue to empower people to make good choices, when there is a choice.

Thanks for reading. I am sorry if it was a book.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve actually covered the topic of the use of materials in a couple of videos. This one comes to mind.

As for the design concepts like chain vs belt, gasket material, or COP, that’s more of a design aspect. In some ways outside my area of expertise. I’m a technician not an engineer. I will say this, just about every design is dictated more by finance than anything else. The less money they spend making something, the more money they can make on the finished product.

Perhaps at some point I’ll cover the topic in more depth. Thanks again for the suggestion.
