? regarding manifold gasket, 250 inline 6cyl gmc

Hi. I removed the steel manifold gasket and noted the perforated side was touching the head, while the flat side touched the manifold. My friend thinks this is incorrect . I could use your input in this matter. 1966-inline 6cyl. 250 gmc engine. Thanks.

There is usually a marking on the gasket on way direction it goes. If your not sure, i would look at FSM or even call the vendor of the gasket maker and see what they state.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to as far as ‘perforated’ as I think the new gasket will be smooth on both sides. As mentioned they sometimes have some sort of marking to tell you the correct direction but I usually just put the gasket in place and look at how it matches up to the mating surface, for the most part you can see when things don’t match up. I’m not saying this rule is cast in stone but if one side of the gasket has stripes on it these normally face the block.

Eric. The gasket in ? has 1 side flat and smooth, while the other side around the intake and exhaust ports are folded over and have several pin holes. This is a 2 part gasket. The job went well and now I am trying to solve a white smoke exhaust problem. Then I can get to the good part of driving it. Thanks again.

Just an update as to the gasket. It turns out that it could only go 1 way. Things went well and as soon as I clear up my white smoke problem from the exhaust I can then have it certified and start driving it. Thanks again.
