Serpentine belt question

      Hi Eric,

My mechanic says my serpentine belt has cracks forming in it and needs to be replaced. When I got home I popped the hood and looked at the belt myself. I saw absolutely no cracks on the non-smooth and smooth side of the belt. My question is, does the belt wear evenly? Is it possible cracks exist in certain lengths of the belt where I cannot see? I did start and stop the engine a few times, and in the visual location the belt still looks fine. I watched your video on changing a serpentine belt so I know what a belt looks like that needs replacing. Mine didn’t look like that. I have 49,600 miles on the belt. I believe my user manual says change the belt every 60,000 miles. Although I drive in a harsh environment. Anyway, your thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

      Jason

Ask the mechanic to show you the cracks.

The mechanic was doing some selling. This isn’t necessarily bad. The first accessory belt on my car was shot at 45k and the second looked like new after going the same distance. So belts do have a lifetime and that lifetime varies belt to belt. A new belt is cheaper than a tow.

I found that taking the belt off and changing it was a great exercise as then you are not afraid to change any of the gear on the belt at a later time. I now frequently have removed the belt to get at belt driven items. It takes me about 2 minutes to pull mine off after practice and from engine hood up to done. I am not sure, but I think they make these belts easy to replace on purpose.

Its a usually a cheap wear item. In my case, the last time i did it, part of the belt had broke away and was making a delightful thwap whatp thwap. so it was easy to find. If he saw cracks, i would trust him, but change it myself. For my car it was about 20-30 dollars for a serpentine belt.
