Late last summer my 2002 Ford Explorer started missing. It threw code for misfire on cylinger 1 and 6. New plugs but the codes remained. As I was trying to get the car inspected, I spent a good bit of time chasing down everything I could imagine to be the cause. I swapped plugs and coils. I checked fuel pressure, checked the vacuum lines, and swapped injectors. As I was doing this, I noticed that if the outside temperature was less than 60degrees F.,
the miss went away. Aha! it must be the temp sensor. Well, analysis of the temp sensor led me to believe that it was working correctly so it must be a broken wire from the sensor to the computer. After running fine through the cold winter (we made it through the inspection) when the outside temperature rose, the miss returned. My son got me a obd2 reader that allowed me to see real time data. To my surprise, the temp information was getting to the computer. Another oddity, the missing cylinders this time were 2 and 8. I decided it was time to do a ground up fix. First thing, a new set of plugs and this time new coil packs. After the install no more miss. My guess is that the coils had breaks in their windings that showed as the temperature went up. So lesson learned. The small price of a tuneup that includes all the high-voltage items.
