Now that the Fairmont is pretty much done, I’m thinking about the next project. Will it be the truck?

Well, if that’s a short box truck, you’ve got the right year, chassis and cab/box configuration to recreate a 454SS.

I believe the interior would have to be changed over to a dark red, and, if memory serves, the rear axle was unique to the 454SS. But you’re at a good starting point. You can wring quite a bit of HP and torque out of a 454 and still keep the engine looking stock. And, nothing says that the truck has to be 100% factory correct.

I’d rather not do a complete engine change for this build. Sure the 454 would be cool, but the time, effort, and expense might not be worth it to me. The 350 that’s in it is in amazing shape. A new set of heads, an intake, new fuel injection set up, possibly multiport, and some headers should wake it up nicely.

I’m also rethinking lowering it. I think I’ll start with the performance upgrades and go from there.

I’m also going to stick with the automatic, a new updated one, but an automatic just the same. My wife really likes the truck and wants to drive it. My daughter has also taken a shine to it. She’s also asked to drive the Fairmont. That’s my girl, going after the 2 best vehicles in the fleet.

You can build the truck GM never did: the 350SS.

The performance/play truck is a cool idea but I think you should “turn it into a work truck”. That is if you can find a way to easily and conveniently protect the paint job. Couple of layers of clear coat, moving blankeys I don’t know, something cheap, down and dirty so when you’re done haulin you can rest easy knowing she’s still gonna look great. Wake up the engine, definitely, go with the new tranny and some heavy duty suspension sounds mint to me.
