Camry stalling and not starting!

I have a 1999 Toyota camry, 5sfe (4 cylinder) with around 170k miles. After owning the camry for a couple months it randomly started to have problems. At idle it will randomly stall, sometimes you can hear it try to stay running and then it will just die. It happens the most when its at operating temp. If you let the car sit for a couple days it will drive perfectly fine but after a couple days of driving it starts acting up again. After the car stalls it won’t start unless you let it sit for a couple minutes (this sucks when you’re at a red light or stop sign). I have researched and tested everything I have read. I have had Toyota specialist and regular mechanics try to figure it out and cant come up with anything. I have tested the IAC, EGR, MAP, (E)CTS, and have cleaned all of this parts. When I have the hood up to hear it running right before it stalls it sounds like something opens up and pulls air and the car stalls but starts back up. If anybody knows something to look at or test more please let me know, thanks.

Did you take this to a dealership?

What did the fuel pressure test they did on the car show?

After it stalls and you try to start it, if it has a Tach, does the tach show RPM’s when trying to start it?

I figure there are not any codes, but have to ask…

Also, the coils have been known to have issues. The dealership should have tested these… Read more about it in the attachment…

I haven’t done a fuel pressure test. It has a new fuel filter and fuel pump. Has no problem accelerating. It doesn’t always stall either. Its just randomly but happens more often when warmed up. No codes are shown. Haven’t gone to a dealer because they charge.. College student I don’t have money to give a dealership when I have talked to multiple mechanics at shops that I know on a personal level and have had them look at it.

        OK…

        The simpler way without DVOM:

If you have been a while without new plugs and wires (over 60k miles), then put new plugs and wires in… Only use NGK or Denso Spark plugs in Toyotas! (at a minimum, at least inspect the plugs)

See how that works for ya… Then if the stalling continues, read the PDF I attached and test it out using a DVOM…

        If you have a DVOM:

If you have a DVOM handy, check out the coils… if they test fine, then replace plugs and wires….

The 2.2L is a hard charger… Very little keeps this engine down… Based upon my experience, it is usually ignition related…

Ok, I will do that test and let you know how it turns out. Thank you!

In addition you might also want to check for vacuum leaks. Those can upset the fuel mixture and cause issues like this. More info here.

Stop back and let us know how your testing went.

Well I did the ignition test and all the spark plugs worked without trouble. I couldn’t find any vacuum leaks but I went ahead and replaced them. Frustrated, I put the car in the garage and let it sit for awhile. Needed to have the battery charged after sitting. Been driving it for the past couple days and its still having the same problems as before. Trying to stall and having troubles starting up after stalling.
