My 1996 Dodge Dakota has recently developed an intermittent problem. I experience periodic shut down. Cranking the engine over, it will not start right away. Sometimes it must be cranked for a long time. Things previously done to correct by a mechanic: replace coil, replace fuel pump. The problem still exists intermittently.

Had the same problem with my 1994 Dakota 3.9. Replaced everything, including the ECM! No help. My truck did the same as yours until it just wouldn’t start anymore.
Finally checked the power wire to the ECM and it was dead.
Still don’t know why it was dead, haven’t found a break or short anywhere.
But ran a wire from a hot wire in the control box to the ECM and it runs without a problem.
But still don’t know what the problem is. LOL
