So I was curious as to y’alls experiences with this. For those not familiar with the term, indexing plugs is when you specfically thread yer spark plugs to where the gap faces the intake valve. This is supposed to increase efficiency and provide a better burn. In y’alls opinions is it worth the extra time?

If you have an engine that has been highly modified to allow the engine to make maximum HP, indexing spark plugs as well as a dozen other tweaks might increase the HP but I doubt if anyone could measure it. I have done it myself and I think it just makes me feel better.

On a every day car off of an assembly line there is no benefit to indexing plugs at all.

Just curious, not that I am going to do it, but can you get the plugs aligned just by torque or do you need an assortment of extra plugs?

I don’t think you will notice a difference in performance but it won’t hurt. You might need two or three sets of plugs to get them all lined up.

Just take a sharpie and mark in line with the ground electrode and just keep switching them from hole to hole till they are all facing the intake valve.

Lets see what others have to say about the matter. I’m also interested to see what Toyotakarl and Eric have to say on the topic.

Spark plug indexing was a good idea for improved combustion when cars were fired with “points” ignition systems and had lousy combustion chamber design. Like maybe the 1950s or so.

But with the great fat thunderbolts thrown by modern ignition systems across huge plug gaps, indexing might be good for your psychology but your engine won’t notice a thing.

It does make sense. By lousy combustion chamber design are you referring to closed chamber shrouded valves?
