Cutting it in half would only damage it. The ceramic is only there to support the important parts, the platinum and palladium. Those are the active metals in the catalytic converter which promote its reaction. . Sometimes those metals flake off of the ceramic substrate. When they do, the catalytic converter will not function anymore no matter how much you clean it. It needs those metals to function. I hope that makes it more clear for you.
