Trans will not engage when the weather gets cold. I can let the car warm up 10 min in drive w the parking brake set. the initial shift is hard , then its normal. the trans clunks when placed in park after driving, and while going slow and turning feels like a 4 wheel drive in 4L all the wheels grab and jerk. on the road 26 mpg and has never failed…yet! the fluid looks grayish needs changing I think. last serviced 80,000 miles has 130,000. any suggestions? or leave the trans alone.. dealer says no codes showing.. pan/filter have never been changed Only acts up in cold weather,

You could try changing the fluid and filter.
but its a roll of the dice more problems won’t
happen. On the other hand it could help.

Neglected trans fluid and filter changes are the source of your woes. There’s no need to drop the pan, as the filter is a spin-on outside the case. The job is very easy; I’d change fluid and filter now, then do it annually thereafter. Your transmission will give you long service if you’ll give it decent fluid.

It sounds to me like the trans has an Internal problem such as hardened clutch piston seals that get pliable once heated up and are able to seal the fluid pressure.

I would start with a fluid and filter change with the correct fluid and if it doesn’t Improve an addition of some Lucas transmission additive might buy you some time.

Personally I hate the Lucas additive but sometimes it serves a purpose.

The binding problem could be solved by changing the transfer case and rear diff fluid with the correct fluid. Sometimes the additives in the fluid that allow smoothe operation wear out over time.

Agree with Bill’s advice on transfer case and differential fluids. All your driveline components need regular servicing. If that’s not been done start there.
