I have been looking for a Peugeot 305 for the past few years, there are still a small number of van versions that occasionally turn up, sometimes a saloon but i wanted the estate (wagon) version as that is what my grandpa used to drive, they were once a fairly common car on the roads but have become quite rare in the past 10 years.
One turned up on ebay and i bought it, the seller agreed to do some work on the car in order to put it back on the road such as welding the sills near the rear wheel arches which i paid for about 3 weeks ago, i went and picked up yesterday, driving it back home from manchester in england via the ferry in holyhead to dublin and drove back to northern ireland where i live, 250 miles travelled without any breakdowns; the first 20 miles went fine but then i hit traffic and got concerned about the temperature needle rising happily the electric fan kicked in when it reached the 1/2 point and the temperature never exceeded this, when driving it stayed much cooler, the carburettor was a bit tempermental at slower speeds it cuts out at junctions but when cruising at 70 it was flawless.
Here it is:

It comes with the 1.6 XU5S engine, and had a weber carburettor fitted to replace the standard Solex one, there is a clatter from the top end and this is most likely to be due to a worn camshaft which these old XU5 engines seemed to suffer from causing it to feel a bit down on power, but the plan is to source an XUD diesel engine which was also offered in this car (and remained in production in various peugeot/citroen cars until about 10 years ago) and convert it to diesel.
The bodywork is in reasonable condition, certainly better than any other 305 i have seen, they are getting very rare now.
I have a few general questions about restoring / using an old car:
The rubber components such as the door seals, window run channels, window seals. What is the best stuff to put on them to stop them from dry rotting, i know keeping it out of direct sunlight is a good start but is there products that keep them soft and good at sealing. Parts for this car are hard to come by now so its a case of trying to keep the existing parts in good condition.
Can an old car be galvanised, it might be a completely impractical and perhaps overly expensive option but i have always thought fully galvanising a car is the best thing to keep rust away, audi did it with their 80 and there are still examples of them for sale without any rust.
