I just bought a soldering iron to fix my main relay (thank you very much–it worked awesome), so I thought I’d try to find out if there was a similar solution to my automatic transmission problem. Sometimes, the D4 light comes on, even if I’m in park, and the AT stops working. It stays in 3rd gear unless I shift manually. And even when I shift manually, it won’t go into 4th gear, so driving on the freeway is a problem. If I disconnect the battery for a few seconds, it temporarily fixes the problem, so I assume it’s a computer thing. Sometimes it’ll go for a month before it happens again, and sometimes (especially lately) it’ll only go for a few blocks. Over the last few weeks, it seems to happen at least once a day. Is there some way I can fix it myself? I’m a novice, though I have managed to learn a lot about this car lately. Thank you!

AMAZING! I pulled out the TCU and compared it to the pictures on the links you gave me. It’s dead-on, exactly the same capacitors and resistors burned out. I’m so excited to fix this! Now, where to buy capacitors? THANK YOU SO MUCH
I replace computer motherboard capacitors from time to time and I either buy them from and electronics part store or E-Bay. Try to stay with name brands such as Panasonic.
You will need the voltage and capacitance stamped on the old ones to purchase new ones. It might be easier to find a TCU at a salvage yard.
Thanks! I actually found a diagram that shows exactly which capacitors go where. And the ones on my TCU board aren’t fried so bad I can’t see what they say. And supposedly, according to this guy (http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=185004), any TCU from a junkyard will be likely to have the same problem eventually, as these capacitors only get 15-20 years of working life, so it’s better to just replace them. And WAY cheaper!
I’m surprised the TCU came out of the car so easy. Most of the stuff under the dash is a real b*tch to get to!
The Eclipse and Talon cars that came out of the Normal Illinois assembly plant had capacitors on the engine computer motherboard that were good for less than five years. I got out my soldering iron, held my breath, prayed and the engine ran again. I hope your result is as good as mine was.

I burned my fingertip a couple times on the soldering iron, but I only spent like $3 on electronic components, and my car drives better than it has since I bought it two years ago. It turns out that even when it wasn’t running in “limp mode,” it wasn’t shifting right. It always felt kinda sluggish. Now it runs super smooth. HAPPY CAR!!! I’m so, so thrilled. I priced a used TCU from a junkyard today, just in case I messed it up worse. They wanted $75 for it, and it would have eventually had the same problem anyway. Every time I fix something, I love my little Honda more!You know, Eric, I just discovered your website and joined the forum a couple months ago (not even! Since the snow melted in MN and it got warm enough to hold a wrench for more than a minute at a time without getting frostbite)! And I’ve already done many, many hundreds of dollars worth of Honda repairs, thanks to your videos and the amazing forum members who’ve responded to my questions. I especially appreciate how thorough your videos are. I like how you explain not only WHICH things are important to pay attention to, but WHY they’re important (particularly the one about the lower spark plug tube seals–that was a really fun job). That’s the kind of job a novice (like myself) could really f%&k up if they didn’t understand what was actually happening as all those bolts get gradually tightened back on. I really love the satisfying sense of accomplishment I get when I fix something, which I would not be able to do if I had to learn from the men in my life, all of whom know fuck-all about cars.
