ive been driving a milk truck with a transmission that continues to pop out of gear it isnt like just a gentle slide right out its an extreme whip that rocks the whole truck and super loud. it only goes like 40-50 mph on i 95. In case your wondering im a milkman. But does anyone know whats wrong with my worktruck? its a international 4900 with a 6 plus transmission? or how to put it out of its misery? Its also got a new clutch in it. Do you know anything about it?

I’m sorry that I don’t have experience with this transmission.
A truck shop may be needed here. 🙂

It might be a problem with one of the syncros. It could also be a bearing that’s bad causing too much clearance between the main shaft and counter shaft. Either way, it’s likely you’ll have to remove the transmission and inspect it’s internals to find out.

also when i drive in 4th gears it will make like a loud baby rattleing sound also. The truck shouldve been taking off the road about 7 years ago before i got it. now for about 5 years ive been stuck in this piece of shit and they actually just put in a turbo. They said it didnt have a working turbo ever since i got it and its a six cylinder engine so i dont understand how i was able to drive it with that much weight. They put the turbo in like 3 months ago. But ever sice they put the turbo in, the transmission has been screwed up? What else could those to things mean?

I used to work at a shop that had an International tow truck that jumped out 4th gear. When it jumped out of gear (especially with a car on the hook) I thought the engine fell out and I drove over it. They didn’t want to pull the trans for repair so I hooked a bungee cord from the shifter to a seat spring poking through the seat. It worked great for as long as I worked there.

Its not 4th gears that pop out, its 3rd but 4th makes a annoying rattling sounds whenever its the drive gear, what could be causing that? Nice redneck gear holder by the way!!! But the 3rd gear i cant even hold in the gear when pushing it in all the way full strenght w/out breaking the stick, and im a milkman so i do heavy liftin everyday except on weekends i just lift beer cans then but a chain would snap if i used it to hold it in. even if the stick dont move its makes the horrible grinding sound and all i smell is something burning. also the truck lurches forward like 10 feet when the gear is being held in by force and it wants to pop out. I would like to see eric to make a vid on youtube about it? soi can better understand this, i can understand everything if i see a drawing and get walked through everything ill better understand.

I guess there is a little “redneck” in all of us. There is definitely worn parts inside as Eric suggested. You might want to look around to see if you can find a used transmission somewhere as it sounds like yours is about to quit completely.

well the trucks been doing this since like september-october and ive been holding 3rd in whenever it trys to pop out to try and blow the engine faster, do you know how long it’ll take because the mechanics at the dairy( i am not responsible for keep the truck fix as its my worktruck not personal truck) wont fix it until its blown. do you know any tricks? how long until it should blow? Also is it bad whenever im driving up a steep hill or on 95 and my turbo is extremely louder than the engine and all i smell is the smell of burning oil, is that good? it seems to happen whenever the turbo is in extreme use? but i would really like to know how long for the tranny to blow?

It sounds like you’re between a rock and a hard place with your truck and the company you work for. There is NO way of knowing how long anything will last but you can only hope it blows up soon. I would park it at the side of the road with a rock on the throttle and put it out of it’s misery. :cheer:

Maybe you should seek employment somewhere else.

well i’m the highest paid their($800-$900) a week and the closet dairy is over 3 hours a way. I’ve worked there for over 20 years now too. But is the turbo supposed to be smelling like that everytime it fires up full throttle? What could that mean?

If I made that kinda money I would be kissing the truck as well as the boss’s butt every day. With that many years of seniority one would think they would give you a reliable truck to drive.

Maybe they want to get rid of you so they can hire someone they can pay less to do the job.

This is all speculation of coarse.

Any truck, new or old should not smell at any time but I suspect that the engine is just worn out causing the oil smell you describe.

oh i boss the boss around, he’s scared of me since i used to be a bouncer before i started this. I had 22 inch biceps then haha. well the thing is also they dont have any other trucks ready. They have just bought 2 freightliners and they’ve yet gotten them tagged and they have been using them to store the deer they kill. all this started when there was water in the whole gas system and she would smoke soo much and i wouldnt be able to go in 5-6 gear because it would immediatly make a loud deep growl and bog down then start smoking anyone out behind us. our top speed was actually 39 mph on 95 with me slamming down the gas. but the oil smeel only comes when ever the turbo fires up. Is their something wrong with it? The turbo is new also. also i noticed theres always a puff of smoke underneath the cab and it chuggs like cha cha cha cha cha it goes with the rpm. Is it suppoesed to be like that also? Is their any video on youtube about the problem with this particular transmission?
