I have a 1994 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L Manual. My car had an issue with jerking while in a higher gear at lower speeds. So I replaced both axles and the problem is gone… Now with the new ones there is a LOT of vibration. 30 Mph is as fast as I will go. The car shakes like mad. Sure I can be in 5th gear going 30 without the jerking, but the vibration is killer. Did I do something worng installing them, or did I get stuck with a bad axle? The passeneger “right” side of the car had the original MFG axle and it looked very nasy inside. The driver “left” side had an aftermarket one. I got the axles from Autozone… I read I should get Raxles and am thinking I should, because I do not want to install these things on another VW for a long time. Only downside is that the cost is 200 per axle. Thanks for any help. 🙂

Jack up the car and take off the front wheel then run the car while observing the axle. The emergency brake should be applied (to the rear wheels) and the car up on solid supports. You should be able to do one side at a time. Be very careful not to get caught up in the works. Once you identify the side that is at fault you should be able to see the source of the vibration.

Worked like a charm. Thanks a lot for the advice. Thank God it was the drivers side… Now all there is to do is wait for my sister to give me a ride to AutoZone.

Well to say the least, I now can install the driver “left” side axle in about 30 minutes… I went through 3 axles from AutoZone. I finally said enough is enough. Put the old one back on, and am saving 280 for a quality one from raxles. Thanks for all of the help. Lesson here, you have to buy quality axles for any VW MK3. Otherwise… well your floor boards might rattle out.

Well apparently my axle is too short. The appropriate axle length is 22″ the one on my car is 21 1/4″ but would this cause all of the vibration?

It may not be the axle. Actually tires are more of an issue when it comes to vibrations. You might try rotating the tires to see if the vibration changes or goes away.

Thanks, I Will keep that in mind. After all of the effort, I went to get my car inspected, and they found a small “small” rust hole. I took up the carpet to see how “small” and pretty much all of the floor boards are rusted. Anywhere I apply pressure, BAM a new hole… the frame is starting, and the engine is dying, so I am getting a different car very soon. Thanks everyone for helping me try and solve my problem. 🙂 looking at an 86 Toyota Camry. No rust a and a standard. 😀

Yea, once you reach a certain point with structural issues you just have to call it. I think you’re right to look for another vehicle at this point. Keep us posted if you make any more progress with the vibration or if you get rid of the car.
