I bought this pickup and the owner said that it would die out when the engine got to normal operating temp. I worked on this pickup all weekend and found out that was not the case. The pickup dies out randomly and won’t start again for a long time (8 or so hours). This truck has a new distributor cap wires and plugs. I checked the spark and the compression and both are great. I also checked the vacuum lines and all the sensors that I could think of. I have the exact same pickup so I was just swapping out sensors to try to find a bad one. While doing all of this, no code was thrown out by the computer. I disconnected the fuel line at the throttle body to see if fuel was getting to it and it is but only when the engine is trying to turn over. I replaced the fuel pump and checked the relay and fuses for the pump, which were fine. After replacing the pump, the truck does the same thing. Am I missing something? I don’t understand how it can run for a while, die out and randomly start again. Is the wiring faulty to the pump? Or does anyone have any suggestions on what to try to fix it? Thanks

If you left it idling in your driveway, do you think it would die? I only ask because it seems like the only way to test it to see what’s wrong is to check for spark or fuel right after the truck dies. Intermittent problems suck lol…

It will die when it is just parked in my driveway. I checked the spark and it has a strong spark. I’m just lost at what to look for next.

When I was working on it, I took off the air filter to see the two injectors pulsing the fuel into the engine. It idles rough when it does run and then it just randomly quits getting fuel.

Does it have its original catalytic convertor? It kind of sounds like it could be a plugged cat.

Its actually straight piped. All the exhaust rusted off at one point so a straight pipe system was put on. I’m guessing there wasn’t an oxygen sensor in the exhaust.

Electric fuel pump, right? I wonder if it could be a bad fuel pump ground? Just brainstorming at this point.

So it gets spark and fuel right after the truck dies? How is fuel pressure after it dies? Try spraying some carb cleaner or ether in the throttle body when it dies and see if the car will start. If it does, then it’s a fuel issue.

I don’t have a fuel pressure gauge, but it does get spark when it won’t start. When I spray carb cleaner in the throttle body it will just run as long as I keep spraying it. I just replaced the fuel pump so if its a fuel issue, where do I start?

Check the fuel pressure regulator. If you have a return line on the fuel system, clamp it off and see if the truck starts. Not clear to me whether you have MFI or TBI.

I would start by testing at the fuel pump relay first since it’s the easiest to access and you know it’s fuel related. Get a wiring schematic and test the hots and grounds at the relay after getting the truck to die again. You will want to try and do testing with the relay installed if possible, sometimes T-pins or short jumpers can help. If you have no problems there then you know at least it is related to the wiring or mechanicals after the relay and if you do have something missing at the relay you know it is before the relay or the relay itself. Start there and post back what you find.
